VALERIE SWUNG THE door to the grocery store open, letting some sunlight into the building. It was unusually warm for march; the sun had been shining bright for the past three days. The bell that was placed over the door rang, making the cashier, a guy that couldn't be older than 22, look up lazily before turning back to his phone.

She seemed to be alone in the store; she couldn't hear anything except the sound of her own footsteps and the shelves were full. The girl made her way over to one of them and took two bags of chips. As she walked around the shelves to get to the counter, she took her wallet out of her pocket to get some money. Focused on the coins, she almost didn't notice that someone was standing in front of her and prevented running into them by quickly taking a step back.

It was a girl around her age. Her red hair flew over her shoulders and her features looked soft and delicate. She had just finished texting someone on the phone and put it back into her jeans pocket, looking up and locking eyes with Valerie, who was staring at her.

The two girls awkwardly looked at each other for a few more seconds. Valerie was still staring at the redhead, who was uncomfortably shifting her weight from one foot to the other.

"Um, Hi?"

Valerie snapped out of her trance, quickly realizing how weird she was being. "Oh my god, I'm so sorry. I'm usually not this weird, I swear. I'm sorry." She blushed, internally cursing herself for making things awkward between her and this stranger- or was she one?

To her surprise, the other girl laughed, and Valerie melted at the sound."It's fine, really. Did you need something, or...?"

"Actually, I wanted to ask something," , she started. "This might sound weird, but do i know you? I feel like I've seen you before."

The girl in front of her chuckled again, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "That's not so unlikely, actually."

Before she could say something else, it clicked in Valerie's head. "Wait, did you play Annie in the 2012 Broadway revival or am I confusing you with someone else? I saw it when I was younger and I really liked it, so..."

The girl seemed surprised and Valerie immediately assumed that she said something wrong. Why was she even overthinking this? She usually never did that. Besides, she probably just wasn't used to getting recognized. But what had she meant before, then?

"Yeah, I did, actually. But how did you recognize me? It's been like, eight years."

Valerie shrugged. "I'm good at remembering faces, I guess. And I'm also a huge theatre nerd."

The other girl bit her lip, thinking about something. "What's your name again?"

Valerie responded, raising her eyebrows. Once again, the girl surprised her with what she said next.

"Wait, weren't you in Fun Home on Broadway? I mean, I might be wrong, but..." She trailed off, looking at the ground.

"Yes, I was," , Valerie quickly jumped in, not wanting things to be awkward again. "It was amazing, I really miss everyone from the show."

The redhead exhaled, smiling at her."That's really cool. One of my friends was in the show a while ago, so that's how I recognized you."

"Well, tell her I said hi!"

"I will. It was really nice talking to you, by the way."

"You too!" Before she could say goodbye, her phone vibrated, showing a text from her friend Simon.

#1 VALERIE STAN
where are u i need to rant about waitress 🥺

She quickly responded before stuffing her phone back in her jeans pocket and looking up. "Sorry about that. I've got to go, but maybe I'll see you around?" Her voice sounded more hopeful than she had intended it to be.

"Maybe." , the girl responded, smiling widely. She stepped aside so Valerie could get to the counter to pay for the chips she had been holding throughout the entire conversation. When she walked past her, their hands brushed together for a second, and they both locked eyes once again.

"I'm Sadie, by the way."

"Nice to meet you, Sadie."

They parted ways, and throughout the whole walk to Simon's house, Valerie couldn't stop thinking about the girl from the store.

Well, shit.
