I woke up when Ian started sobbing softly. I sat up and held him close to my chest fixing his hair to calm him. He sobbed into my chest. I kissed his head gently. He looked at me with tear filled eyes.
"It'll be alright"
He nodded shakily. I continued stroking his hair humming softly. He relaxed slowly. I continued humming until he fell sound asleep. I tucked him in with Hanna. Her dog curled up between then. The night I left to search for chance homes for her. I washed my face, hands and armpits so I didn't smell or look horrible.
I began my trek just as the sun peeked over the horizon. I returned that night as the sun slowly set. Ian had helped the young girl get a bath and was brushing her hair gently. She was petting her loyal mutt.
"Hello hon"
I smiled at Ian's comment. I felt like I was part of a family. I finally know what love feels like. I finally know what it's like to love someone and how much it hurts when they're not by your side. He'd made another bed for the second floor which me and him would be using. I honestly don't want Hanna to go.
"I found a home for Hanna"
"I don't wanna go"
Ian looks at her shocked. I looked at her as she got up and ran to me. Her small arms wrapped around my legs as she sobbed.
"You're the best mommy and daddy I could ever have"
I looked at her shocked. She cried into my thighs so I scooped her up and let her cry into my chest. I hummed a lullaby to soothe her. Ian sighs and clears his throat.
"She can stay with us and her little dog too"
She smiled and hugged my torso happily. I swayed gently rocking her slowly to sleep.
"Goodnight mommy"
"Goodnight little one"
