I walk out of the bathroom and sit down on my bed. After Roman and I walked back to camp I took a record setting 2 minute shower. I hear a bunch of laughter and I peek out of the window to see who it is. I see Roman and another guy, perhaps a camper, sitting around the campfire with Joe. I check the time and see that it's only been about thirty minutes since I've been here.
And only one other camper has shown up.
I grab Romans shirt and head outside. None of them look up as I approach them. I sit down on the log closest to me. They all look up as I sit down.
"Oh hi." Roman says. I flash him a smile.
I notice the guy sitting to the right of him. He has dark black hair, to the point where it almost looks navy blue. He has hazel eyes and a hoop nose ring with diamond earrings. He's wearing a yellow shirt with a black leather jacket and black ripped jeans with black Doc Martens.
Roman must notice me looking at him because he laughs and points at him.
"Oh, him? Don't waste your time. He's not worth looking at. He has a girlfriend anyways."
The guy chuckles. "What? No I don't."
He turns to look at me. "I'm Jace Carter, and I don't have a girlfriend."
I smile at him. "I'm Avery Morgan."
Roman clears his throat. "Hey, Aves, is that my shirt?"
Aves?
"Um, yeah, here." I get up to give it back to him.
"Oh no, you can keep it." He winks at me.
Why on earth would I want to keep his shirt?
"Umm.."
"Dude, I don't think she wants to keep your shirt." Jace points out.
"Sure she does. Don't you?" Roman insists, giving me a harsh glare.
"Umm..."
"Duuude she doesn't want it." Jace comments.
Joe clears his throat and I go back and sit down.
"Hey guys--and girl--I just received a call from Mrs. Keever on the status of the campers. Theres been a little mix-up. You see, when the other campers signed up we told them to be here by June 20th. Well, we were going by the schedule for last year. We didn't realize it until after all of the other campers signed up. We changed the date to arrive on June 15th, today, and that date is the one that you all were told to arrive on. We forgot to notify the other campers about the date change."
"Wait, so are we gonna be the only campers for like a week?" Jace asks.
"Well, yes. 5 days."
"Why can't you just tell the others about the date change?" I ask.
Joe smiles. "Well, why can't we just enjoy the peacefulness for a couple more days?"
"Um, because I'm going to he having to sleep all alone in the cabin. By myself. In the dark." I say. I look behind me at the Sea Turtle cabin. There are no lights on inside and it looks eerie.
"Yeah, I'm going to be all alone, too." Roman says.
"And me." Jace pipes up.
"What cabin are you in?" I ask.
"Clam." He says.
"You guys will wish you had enjoyed being alone when all of the other campers get here. Trust me." Joe says.
We all laugh. "Yeah. I guess your right." I say.
Joe stands up. "Oh, by the way, there's an air horn that blows at 7 am and 8 pm. 7 is when you get up and 8 is when lights go out."
He walks away, towards the office.
We all sit around the campfire for a moment, no one talking.
"Well, I guess we better part ways. That airhorn is going to go off in about 5 minutes. So are all of the lights." Jace says.
We all stand up.
"Well, see you tomorrow." I start to walk away.
"Hey, Avery, wait." Roman says rushing towards me. "I'm sorry for trying to force you to take my shirt. That was of weird and embarrassing for me to do. And for calling you Aves. I don't know what I was doing back there." I can tell he's embarrassed.
Which makes me embarrassed.
"It's fine....actually, no it's not. It made me really uncomfortable. And please, don't ever call me Aves again. Here's your shirt." I hand it to him.
He gives me a small smile. "Sorry." He almost whispers.
He turns and walks away. "Roman wait."
He turns around. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight, Avery."

I turn and walk into my cabin. It's dark and the airhorn goes off. I jump a little. And thirty seconds later all of the lights in camp shut off. I close the door and go to lock it. But there isn't one.
Ugh.
I plug up my phone and get in bed. The sheets are cold. I hear a creek and the door to the cabin opens a little, letting in a breeze. I jump out of bed and close the door. Okay, now it is freezing. I close the door back and get into bed.
The sheets are cold, again. A few moments later the door swings wide open and a huge gust of wind blows through. When did it get so windy??
I close the door and get back in bed. The door opens and another breeze flows merrily in.
This is gonna be a long night.
