In the woods there are many different ways to set up camp. Normally someone would set up camp when they are ready to make dinner.
Sleeping gear:
Depending on where you are you can sleep on the ground or in a tree.
A tent or lean-to shelter should be placed on even ground although if you have to it doesn't need to be.
Make sure you don't set up camp in a ditch. If you do then rain can flood you and your gear making it hard to pack up.
Another option is a hammock or tree platform. This can help you avoid getting nasty encounters with some wildlife. Falling isn't a problem with a hammock if you make it correctly. Secure it evenly along two trees or two wide branches. To make a platform takes a little more work effort. Go out and find branches a little taller than you. They can be either branches or sticks. If you have sticks tie them into bundles about the size of a branch. The harder part is securing you branches to a tree. Find tree with a lot of wedges for you to place you branches. If you can overlap and use rope to secure.
Where to put the Fire:
The fire can be placed in a cleared out area or on top of a slab or rock. Don't keep it too close to your sleeping area or equipment.
If you don't feel safe while away from your fire then you can put it out and store some embers in a safe place for later use. Don't burn down another forest like me...jk XD.
Where to put Equipment
Put your extra food and equipment up in a tree so that critters can't make a mess. Or bears, bears will look for food too.
