Chapter 2
Because it's a "surprise"
Never in my life did I think I would be upset and confronting my Mom about something, about anything actually. We had Mom and Tessa sit on the couch that was still covered in plastic, while we stood over them.
If there was anything I left back home, it was Nate. Every time I went home, I would only see him for less than a minute because he was always off to go somewhere or we were just completely avoiding each other. Naming Nate as my mortal enemy is an understatement, he's more than that. He is more than words could ever explain. After I confessed my feelings for him as a 7-year-old, as a fricking 7-year-old, our whole dynamic changed. We would just constantly annoy the hell out of each other, play pranks on each other until suddenly my "childhood crush" on him turned into "childhood hate." It went on the whole of grade school, every day was a battle between us. Of course, some girls hated me for "overreacting" because they're too overprotective of their "crush" but they just didn't get it. Mom and Tessa never cared though, they literally had us do everything together, we even went on trips together but nothing changed. We just never acted normal towards each other, well there was that one time before I left to study here.
"You didn't tell me I had an apartment-mate," I tell my Mom sternly with my arms crossed.
"Why didn't you tell me, she was going to be my apartment-mate?" Nate asks Tessa.
"At least she told you that you have an apartment-mate," I say to Nate. "From all the people you could surprise me with, it had to be him?"
"Same thoughts," Nate says.
"We figured that if we told you, the two of you would back out and we'd never be able to bring you here" Tessa explains, my Mom nods with a smile.
"Nate and I don't even talk to each other. We don't even like being in the same room together, what more live together?" I can't believe it, I was betrayed by my own Mom. "Please don't tell me you're going to the same university as me," I say to Nate.
"He's in the same university as you," My Mom says with a smile on her face, a fricking smile. "We figured it would be best to place you in the same apartment since it's convenient"
"Also, we won't worry about the two of you since you're together, we won't worry about your safety since you can commute together as well" Tessa adds, "Also we trust the both of you to look out for each other, even if there's hate between the two of you"
"Plus, the rent is cheap since we're splitting," My Mom says happily elbow bumping Tessa, "You'll never know, maybe you can rebuild your friendship,"
"A friendship that was lost more than 10 years ago!" Nate exclaims.
"How did you even get into the same university as me? Are you following me?" I ask pointedly asked, Nate.
"My Mom said this was a good school so she told me to give it a try" he explains, "You're not the only smart one in this room, you know"
I'm taken aback, I didn't even bother replying. Just then Ash knocks on the open apartment door, he brought a group of men to help us unpack and fix the place. I'm literally left with no choice, it's not like I have the money to move into a whole new place by myself. Also, I guess this is better than having to stay in a university dormitory... no offense to Jesse though.
Nate and I ignored each other from that moment on. I brought my things to my room and unpacked the boxes. The room was somewhat prepared for me to live in, there was a desk, a bed frame, shelves, and a closet. I started unloading my things, placing them into the shelves; next were my clothes which I had to refold again neatly for my closet. My Mom came into the room to fix my bed and sweep the dust out of the room.
After unboxing everything for my room, I went out to help in the living room. I grabbed some biscuits from the pantry that Tessa organized, then walked over to Ash and his group who were assembling the coffee table for the living room. It was the last thing they had to do for the day, the couch was all set as well as the rugs and other shelves. "Here, I figured you guys should take an eating break?" I suggest while handing Ash the biscuits.
"Thanks" he says happily taking them, flashing me his signature smile. I sure wouldn't mind staying in this apartment as long as he was my neighbor. "I forgot to introduce you to my team" he swallows a biscuit then points at the guy who was screwing the table, "that over there is Brinley" then he points at the one beside Brinley, "that is Deavan" then he puts his arm around the shoulder of the guy next to him and says, "and this is Zack, my boyfriend"
Oh. OH. I suddenly feel myself flushed in embarrassment, oh God. Zack leans over to Ash, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek. "Please don't do that, you're just making me feel more single than I already am" I tell them jokingly, trying to hide my embarrassment.
"No, go on guys!" Suddenly a voice behind me exclaims, "your just jealous"
"Nobody was talking to you, Nate" I reply without turning back to look at him. As if my luck could even get any worse.
"Anyways, before the two of you burn this apartment down, I think we should get going" Brinley suddenly says as he places his tools back into the kit beside him, "it was nice meeting you, Anna" he extends his hand toward me and I shake it. Knowing that my neighbors are friendly and nice gives me a sense of comfort in case I don't want to stay around when Nate is home.
When the boys left, it became my Mom and Tessa's turn to leave. I suddenly started to feel nervous and horrified at the thought of me being left alone with Nate. "Mom, do you really have to leave?" I ask her for the 100th time as she packs her bags.
"Yes, I do. You don't have to talk to Nate if you don't want to you know" she pats my cheek for reassurance but my nerves weren't calming down. "I'll see you soon, okay?" She gives me a tight hug and kisses me on the cheek.
I begged Mom and Tessa to stay for the night since their flight back was going to be tomorrow night but they really wouldn't budge. They insisted on going back to my old apartment where my Mom's things were, because the drive was long and they didn't want to wake up early the next day. Understandable, but still.
"Thank you for today and the apartment" I tell her before she leaves, I give her one last hug as well as to Tessa.
Nate brings them down to where the car was and suddenly silence enveloped the whole apartment, finally. I enter my room and laid down on my bed, realizing how tired I was, I finally fell asleep thinking that maybe this was all a bad dream.
