We finally got the upper hand and sent all the people who were going around the mountain back to their base. I observe the surroundings and decide to take the offensive position.
"Grier, Elaina, George!" I yell, "I'm gonna go and try to get the flag. Are you guys good here?"
"Yeah, we are good."
"Yeah! Go for it, girl!"
"Don't die."
"Ok, thanks guys. I'll be back in a bit." I climb up the rocks trying to be fast but also hidden. The snow makes the ground cold and slippery and the bushes keep getting in my way. I make a mistake. I turn too quickly and suddenly there is a person from the other team right in front of me. I jump back instinctively but fall in between the bushes, onto the snow. He had turned too quickly, too, and fallen just like I had. I get my foot ready to shoot myself in the other direction to get away from the enemy when I look up and realize it's him. He recognizes me too.
"H-hey" he says shakily, "it's ok I'm not gonna Tag you back to your base."
"Ok" I speak shakily too, but a bit more covered up.
"So. . . How have you been? It's been a while."
"Yeah it has. Sorry about that. I've been good. How have you been?"
"Ya know. Hanging in there."
"Ah" I'm not sure what else to say. It's so awkward. We had a thing over the summer. It was really fun. But then the cold came and with it came school. I told him I had to focus on my grades so we should end our fun. I didn't think I would actually see him again. And, I mean, it's not like we really had anything real either. There weren't any feelings involved that we spoke of. Not that we spoke of at least. I never admitted it but deep down the other reason I ended things was because I started to have feelings for him. But I didn't think the feelings were returned and I couldn't handle that. Not with school too.
"Listen. Back then— I mean. . . Do you. . . Give me a second, I'm sorry" he spoke with a trembling voice. Does he hate me that much for what happened?
"No problem. Take your time." There's not much else to be said right now. I feel so anxious. What's he gonna say? Maybe I should just say something and leave. . .
""Do you wanna get to know each other again?" Too late. He spoke before I could figure something out. "I know what you said at the beginning of school and if that stands I'll respect that. But I don't want something fake, Lila, I want something real with you. I have liked you for a really long time and. . . Well I can't seem to get you out of my head. I'm sorry." He is beat red now. My heart softens and I feel my face turn red too. He had returned my feelings? No way. . . What do I even say?
