Chapter 4

Annabeth's POV

First day of senior year! Most people don't get that excited about school. I know. So far, it seems like this year will be pretty good. Except that Percy Jackson is in most of my classes. How am I supposed to avoid acknowledging the fact that he probably doesn't like me like I like him if we're going to be forced to spend 5 hours every day together.

I start my day with math. It actually isn't a terrible of a way to start my day as everyone else in my class seems to think it is. It's definitely better than English. The teacher, Mrs. Dodds, usually only teaches sophomore algebra, but this year the school asked her to teach the advanced senior class as well. She seems okay, maybe a bit strict, but overall a pretty good teacher so far.

My second class is Architecture. If you can't tell just by that class, I want to be an architect. There really isn't much to say about this one, though.

Then comes my first class with Percy. Gym. Other than Percy being in the class, I really don't mind it. My friend Piper is also in the class, so we spent most of the hour chatting as we walked around the gym. Piper's crush, Jason also happens to be in the same class, so at one point she was talking about him. I wasn't fully listening, and started staring at Percy. Gods why does he have to look so hot in that gym uniform. This makes it so much harder to get over this silly crush.

Of course, Piper caught me staring. She grinned at me and basically yelled to the entire class "Speaking of crushes, Percy's over there. Maybe you should just ask him out and get it over with. What's the worst that could happen?"

I shot her a glare and mumbled "I ask him out, he says no, and I embarrass myself in front of the entire class. Besides, this is just a silly crush. I'll get over it soon."

Piper just sighed and raised her eyebrows. "You and I both know that that is bullshit, Annabeth. You've been saying that since we were 12."

"It has been true since we were 12," was my snarky response.

"Yeah, right." Piper rolled her eyes. "I'll make you a deal. I'll ask out Jason if you ask out Percy. That way we'll both be embarrassed." At that point I am almost certain I heard her mutter "As if that boy would say no to you anyway. He's been looking at you with puppy dog eyes since middle school."

Exasperated at this point, I nearly shouted "I'm not asking out Percy."

The second the words left my mouth, I realized that if there ever was any chance of him liking me, it was probably ruined since he probably thought I hated him now. I looked over to where he was, and my heart nearly broke at the look of hurt that flashed across his face, but almost the second I saw it, he turned away, and by the next time I was able to see his face it had gone back to showing almost no emotion whatsoever.

When gym was over, Piper and I walked to the cafeteria for lunch. When Percy came in and joined the line to get lunch, I tried to catch his eye, but he wouldn't look my direction. I wished he could somehow read my mind so he would know how sorry I was about what I said. I considered actually going up to talk to him, but before I could work up the courage, he was leaving the cafeteria to go to the library. As he walked out the door, I groaned and put my head down on the table. "I'm an idiot."

My friend Hazel patted my arm and said, with concern in her voice "No you aren't, Annabeth. What makes you say that you are?"

Piper asked "Is this about what happened in gym with Percy?" I nodded, my forehead still pressed against the cool wood of the table.

Piper began quickly explaining what happened to all of our friends as I silently wished I had some sort of time machine so I could stop myself from saying what I had said less than an hour before. Or maybe I could just go back and make sure I was never born... Although that would create quite a paradox, so maybe that wouldn't be the best plan.

Once Piper had finished explaining, each of my friends had their own response. Some were sympathetic, but most of them just told me to go talk to him.

Finally, prodded along by my friends, I gathered my lunch and left the cafeteria to find the boy I had been crushing on since 6th grade.

When I got to the library, however, I saw that he was talking to his younger cousin, so I decided I shouldn't interrupt them, so I wound up just checking out a book and heading toward my next class. Ancient Greek.

The rest of my day was uneventful. Even though Percy was in every single one if my classes, I kept finding reasons not to talk to him about the events of the morning. He or I always seemed to be busy with something, and in the 15 minute period at the end of English that Mr. Blofis gave us to just chat, it just seemed weird to talk about that sort of thing in front of Percy's stepdad.

In our final class, the drawing class I took because I was told it would work well with architecture, when the teacher told the class that it would not be an easy A, I just so happened to be looking at Percy and saw the panic on his face. I hope he makes it through this year okay.

Hey guys! This chapter was surprisingly quick to write. And it's more like a story (ish)! I really like the gym scene in this one, because it's kinda interesting to see the differences in how they percieve the exact same events. Of course, they can't both be entirely correct about everything that happened, so who's right? Are either of them? That's actually up for you guys to decide for right now (maybe the "real" version of what happened will come in, maybe it won't. I haven't decided yet). Sorry, we just talked about the "unreliable narrator" in my English class, so I kinda wanted to bring that in.
