When Judd called Weston to tell him his wife died in a car accident Weston Ryder's heart stopped, which was five years ago. When Judd was wheeled into the ER of Travis County hospital Weston's heart stopped again, for obvious reasons Weston couldn't treat his brother but he watched with Grace as he screamed in pain, when Weston found out Judd was the only survivor Weston's heart broke, even more, he held Grace as she cried not only for her husband but for the people she came to love and thank of as family, that all happened 6 months ago. Judd after a 6 week stay in the hospital where Weston couldn't treat him but he stopped by Judd's room often to keep him from running off.
It felt like Weston's life was trying to punish him for something, but he had two kids to take care of, it helped the Grace and Judd both wanted the kids around to cheer them up and who is Weston to deny them that.
Being a single dad in Texas isn't easy, he guesses that's why his friend Eddie moved to Los Angeles, to get away from the unwanted advice from elderly woman, not to mention the racism from some people that his kids get, it was hard but Weston is glad that he has Judd to lean on and the perfect sister-in-law Grace.
"Dad!" Lucas yelled from the living room making Weston groan and want to cry, he loves his kids but it seems to never stop.
He walks into the living room and has to stifle a laugh.
Trixie his oldest child was holding a remote high so Lucas couldn't get it.
"Trixie, let your brother have the remote," Weston tells his kids sternly.
"But dad, it's my turn," Trixie whines a little, it wasn't uncommon for the 14-year-old to be whining, as much as Weston tries to tell himself he was a teenager it's hard to parent one.
"Actually, it's time for breakfast." Weston grabs the remote and turns the tv off ignoring his kids' protests.
"Come on dad!" Lucas whines a little but following Weston to the dining table.
"Eat, your buses are arriving soon." Weston takes a seat at the dining table and begins eating his breakfast too.
"Is Auntie Grace not gonna take us?" Trixie huffs but starts to eat her food.
"No, she has to take care of Uncle Judd until I get there," Grace called Weston this morning saying Judd had a bad nightmare and didn't feel comfortable leaving Judd alone so Weston asked to take the day off and he was granted the day off because he has good co-workers.
"Can we go see Uncle Judd and Auntie Grace before we go off to school?" Lucas swings his feet back and forth before taking a spoonful of cereal.
"Not today kiddo." Weston kisses Lucas on the head and goes into his room to change into something comfy but more presentable than his pajamas.
He finishes getting dressed just has Trixie's bus pulls up.
"Have fun at school kiddo." Weston walks out of the room and hugs his daughter handing her, her backpack that was on the hanger by the door.
"Ready for school kiddo?" Weston asks Lucas as he grabs the bowls and dumps out the leftover milk.
"No, school is boring." Lucas huffs squealing when Weston bends over and sits him on his lap and starts to tickle him.
"You gotta go to school to be smart." Weston stops tickling Lucas so he can catch his breath.
Weston hugged Lucas tightly, Lucas reminded Weston of his wife, Lucas was only five when she passed so he didn't have a lot of memories left which caused tension with Trixie but Weston calmed them down before it could get worse.
"Dad, the bus is here." Lucas breaks Weston out of the trance he was in.
Weston lets his son down from his lap and gets up, he grabs his keys and walks out the door with Lucas's backpack.
"See you after school kiddo." Weston helps Lucas put his backpack on and watches him walk on this bus.
Weston makes sure his door is locked and walks over to Judd's house which is right next door.
"Hey, I'm here." Weston opens the door and watches as Grace is running around in the kitchen trying to get ready for work.
"Thank goodness, Judd is on the couch like always, thank you for doing this." Grace hugs Weston before grabbing her purse.
"Of course Grace, good luck at work." Weston watches as Grace walks out the door and locks the door behind her.
"Hey, Judd," Weston says as he takes his jacket and shoes off walking towards the couch where Judd was aimlessly flipping through shows.
"Hey West, did Grace tell you to watch me?" Judd huffs finally settling on a show.
"Yea, she told me you had a nightmare last night." Weston gently explained, he wasn't sure how Judd would react.
"It's no big deal, I'm a grown man, I can take care of myself." Judd huffs standing up walking towards the kitchen, Weston huffs and follows him.
"It's not that just her that's worried about you Judd, you're my big brother and you're breaking, fast." Weston knew this conversation was going to go nowhere, and it would end up where it ends up each time.
"I'm not going to a damn therapy, I don't need it." Judd slams his fist on the counter which makes Weston shake his head and walk over to his brother.
"Can you move it?" Weston checks out Judd's hand making sure it's not broken.
"Yea," Judd mutters showing Weston how he can move his fingers.
"How are the kids doing?" Weston can tell that Judd is changing the subject so he lets it slide.
"Good, they're kids. Didn't want to go to school but what's new." Weston chuckles walking back to the couch with Judd.
"I remember when you didn't want to go to school either, would beg me to hide you until Dad left." Judd laughs at the memory, Weston playfully hits him lightly.
"Well, now I'm a doctor so thanks for making me go."
