Mayaa's expression was the literal representation of pure shock and awe.

She looked like a fish with with her wide eyes and opened jaw. "You're kidding."

I shook my head solemnly. "All that I have said is one hundred percent the truth." I pointed to my eyes. "These two eyeballs were blessed by the wondrous architecture of Wellston High."

"But marble flooring? I'm not an idiot Skyler."
"No, it's for real. You have to-"
"Urrr... Skyler..."
"I'm not crazy! I know what I saw and-"

"Skyler!" Mayaa hissed, jabbing her thumb towards Mr Murphy.

That was when I realised that the whole class was staring at me. My gaze slowly turned to an unimpressed Mr Murpy. "Care to share what is clearly more important than algebra, Skyler?"

I shook my head, wanting to dig a hole and hide in it. "Do you at least know the answer to question seven?" he sighed.

"I..... uh..." I looked down at my worksheet. Question seven was left blank.

I gulped, my fingers automatically reaching for my ring. It was a habit. Whenever I became anxious or scared, I liked to fiddle with my ring. Except... where was my ring?

My eyes shot to my fingers only to see them bare. No...no..no..no..no..no.. please... just please! No!
My stomach dropped and tears started to prick at the corners of my eyes. I rubbed the finger that I usually wore my ring on, my eyes frantically scanning my table for the ring.

BBBRRRRRIIIIIIINNNNNGGGGG

"Looks like the bell saved you Skyler. Class
dismissed!" Mr Murphy grunted before gathering his things and leaving the classroom.

The ruckus the rest of the class was making as they packed their bags and swarmed out of the classroom was like the background noises in movies. Muffled and in the distance.

All I could think about was the ring.

"Skyler, what's wrong?" Mayaa asked, her eyebrows furrowed in concern. She must have noticed my bloodshot eyes and pale face.

"Where's my ring?" I whispered absentmindedly as I desperately searched my bag and the area around my table. How could you lose it! You're such an idiot Skyler! You're such a stupid, stupid idiot! You don't-

"Skyler!" Mayaa yelled, grabbing my arm.

I froze. Her voice was ringing in my head, cutting through all of my frenzied thoughts.

"What's wrong with you? I kept shouting your name but you didn't even hear me!" Mayaa asked exasperatedly. "Mayaa... I... I... lost..."

I broke down. The tears spilled down my cheeks and my face contorted into an ugly expression.

In seconds, Mayaa had enveloped me into her arms,  one hand patting my back comfortingly as she rocked me slowly. "Shhh...it's okay..." she whispered soothingly as I cried into her sleeve, my shoulders heaving with each sob.

"I lost... the... the ring Mayaa," I managed to say in between my sobs. The lump at the back of throat was starting to hurt a lot.

"You mean... the ring your dad gave you?" Mayaa whispered. I knew she was trying to keep her tone calm but I could still detect the hint of shock and disbelief in it.
