ATHENA NELSON is smart, almost too smart for her own good. She's lived in the dreary town of Forks, Washington all her life. It's not much, but it's home. She sometimes wishes that she had more friends, friends who would share in her excitement when there was a shooting star in the sky. Or in math class when they went over calculus. But it doesn't really bother her to be alone.

Since she'd been a little girl, she's always wanted to work for NASA. She wanted to be an engineer, and she wanted to change lives. Her biggest inspiration being Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who calculated rocket trajectories by hand. Her calculations were critical to the success of some of the first U.S. spacecrafts. Athena only hoped to be as good as her one day.
But her universe implodes - the stars disappear and she's left in a world of darkness. She finds herself not being able to do the things she had no trouble doing before. She had a sudden lack of appetite and awareness, she also found herself developing some form of OCD. She couldn't stop pacing, and all the doors or windows had to be closed three times before she could step away.
