Jade wakes up to Regina hitting her in the face with a pillow. She swats at her lazily and after a few more times getting bat in the head, she sits up.
"What do you want?" she mumbles groggily.
"The hurricane messed up everything. Dad wants to you to help clean up."
Jade checks her alarm clock, "its six in the morning."
"Yeah, well, I'm not doing it by myself. Mom woke me up ten minutes ago. Her and Dad are running errands and doing a damage sweep."
Jade gets out of bed and changes out for a clean shirt. She glances at her sister with her wild frizzy hair and dark circles under her brown eyes. "Did you get to sleep at all last night? Or were you partying too hard?"
"How was your nerd conference yesterday?"
"First of all, it wasn't a 'nerd conference'. It was rehearsal and giving me the rundown of the performance."
"Its Shakespeare so it has to be nerd stuff. And I honestly can't believe you're going to kiss Sam in that play. Why would you do that?"
"Why is everybody asking that?"
"I mean, Sam's cute and all, but you can't just kiss your friend and then be like nothing happened."
"Its acting. That's how it goes. Besides, we haven't even gotten to that yet."
"Okay, just don't let it get out of hand. And put on something more... preppy or something that says 'I know how to socialize'."
"Preppy? Oh no, we're not going to some rich kid thing, are we?"
"Relax, I heard there's going to be a little powwow at the Boneyard tonight."
Jade yanks on a pair of jean shorts, "but you already look like you got hit by an eighteen-wheeler. What if Dad and Mom find out?"
"We'll just tell them the truth," Regina walks down the hall and lays a hand on the banister. She smirks, "lets just say that the best liars are the ones that tell the truth."
"You got that from a tv show," Jade trails along.
"I beat you to the punch. You're basically a walking pop culture index."
"Haha, very funny. So is this some sort of sibling bonding practice that we're doing?"
"The whole island of kids are invited. You don't want to be the only one not going, do you?"
"Peer pressure much?"
"You've been staring at that script for two days straight. I think you need something to clear your head before you lose your mind."
"Well, I guess I could go. Candice is probably dragging Sam along, so I can hang out with them."
They go down the stairs and pass through the living room that looked like it came out of a magazine. It was filled with grays and blues with accents of green and whites.
The hardwood floors were polished from the Conners' maid and the furniture looked brand new and modern. There was an open concept to the room that led directly into the kitchen, which was clean with pale grays and whites. The large sliding doors are open and let in a surprisingly warm breeze into the home.
Halle arranges objects on the island countertops and washes down the surface. Her hair is tied back and she's dressed in overalls and a simple t-shirt. "Good morning, Jade. Sleep well?"
"Regina shouldn't have woken me up," Jade responds.
"You need to straighten out your shirt," Halle walks over and fixes the light-blue striped blouse over her shorts. "Your shell necklace looks good, like a little hula girl."
Regina rolls her eyes, "it needs improvement."
Their mother studies her younger daughter's outfit, "you look like you're going to Coachella."
"Its summer, Mom. I have to," Regina points out.
"Don't let your father see that."
Ian enters through the doorway and removes the gloves on his hands. "Alright, I cleaned up some of the yard. There's now a path going towards the water." He pauses at the sight of his daughters' attires, "go change."
"Hey I'm wearing a shirt, unlike some people," Jade glances at Regina.
"Your stomach's almost showing. You both are not leaving dressed like that."
"But Dad we're going to a party," Regina protests.
"Even worse. You're sixteen, Regina."
"Will there be alcohol at this party?" Halle asks. "We're not raising underage drinkers in this house, and I don't care if we're on vacation."
"Everything's gonna be lowkey," Regina covers their tracks. "I'm going to be seventeen after summer and Dahlia Jade's technically eighteen already. And there won't be a drop of alcohol in sight."
