"I'm living my best life now!" Pope hollers. The car had probably hit two other vehicles, a mailbox, brush on the side of the road, Jade lost count. She holds onto both John B and JJ as they grab the doors.
"My mom'll kill me," Kie mutters.
"I should be the last to say this but you are not okay to drive. Stop!" JJ shouts.
Pope slams on the breaks. "John B, get out."
"He's right. We can draw the cops and you run. I'll get the rig and meet you at 3 by the dump."
"Tomorrow at three o' clock. Got it," John B opens the doors and hops out. Jade crawls over and peers out the window. He nods to her reassuringly before disappearing into the trees.
"We got to go," Kie says, running a hand through her hair.
Jade pulls up the backseat where John B was and slumps into it. Pope pulls away and they drive in silence, pondering their next move.
"I can't believe we're breaking Sarah out," Jade says. "I mean, it also makes sense but it doesn't..."
"We don't have any other options. She saw everything. You were a witness too, but she was there there," Kie replies. She pauses. "Look, I know things are weird between you, Sam, her and John B but I know that John B really likes you. Right now, our mission is what's important."
"Yeah," Jade nods. "Lets bust her out before her psycho dad and brother comes back."
Kie knocks on the windowframe and Sarah darts over, "Kie!"
Kiara holds up the Wanted poster. "Are you in on this?"
Sarah stares at it for a long time. "No," she shakes her head. Sarah then looks at Jade. She looked like she wanted to say something. Then she quickly looks over at the door. "That's my dad. Go!"
Kie and Jade rapidly climb down from her window and launches themselves into the bushes. Jade looks at the Pogues sitting next to her, "what do we do now?"
JJ exhales slowly, "maybe camp out?"
"No. Jade's going home," Kie says.
"What?" Jade and the boys question.
"Hold on, she's as deep in this as we are."
"That's why she's going back to her rental house. She was originally sharkbait, remember? What happens here shouldn't entirely have effected her. If John B was here, he'd totally agree with me."
Jade glances at each of the Pogues that had taken her in just because John B vouched for her. They had become her friends in a matter of days, even closer than her friends on the mainland. "I'm staying with you guys. There's no way I'm stopping now."
"Alright. Okay," Kie manages a smile. "I guess you're officially one of us."
It was early the next morning. Jade runs her fingers through her hair as a comb and straightens out her top. She looks over at Kie and Pope sleeping on their benches in The Wreck. She sighs before slowly getting up. She had concocted a plan in her head without telling the others. If they didn't agree, she would just have to go off on her own.
"What are you doing up?"
Jade pivots to see JJ leaning against the doorframe. "Couldn't sleep."
"You've got a plan. I can see the gears turning."
There was no denying anything from JJ. "Fine. I'm going to see the cops and testify. If Sarah hasn't done it yet, I want to." She heads for the the open door.
"Do you realize how insane that sounds?" JJ props an arm in front of her.
"I know they probably wouldn't believe me, but its worth a chance. And in the case I run into Ward, he can only talk about his kid on legal terms. My dad doesn't know," Jade sternly looks him in the eye.
"Well, your dad is sure as hell looking for you. He knows that you know John B and you've been gone over twenty-four hours."
"You make valid points, JJ, but you don't know how far I can go. Trust me on this. I'll loop back around for you guys if it doesn't pan out."
JJ puts down his arm, "if it doesn't pan out, Jade, you're in hot water."
"I guess I'll take my chances."
"If John B finds out I let you do this..."
"Then lets hope he doesn't."
She moves quickly past all the locals and concerned tourists. She stops as she hears Sarah yelling somwhere and then turns to see Ward talking to an SBI agent. Her blood runs cold. What was she going to do?
Jade hurries and tries to get get someone's attention. Then she bumps into a cop. "Sir, Ward Cameron cannot be trusted. What he's probably telling that SBI agent are lies. Sarah Cameron isn't crazy. She's a witness and she saw who shot the sheriff."
"Whoa, whoa, slow down." The cop pauses, "hey, calm down. Lets take a seat."
"No, because if Ward Cameron sees me, I'm done for," she blurts. "I know for a fact Sarah saw who shot Sheriff Peterkin." Jade reluctantly sits down in a metal chair.
"John Booker Routledge."
"No. Ward Cameron threw John B under the bus, because he was exploitable. John B is currently homeless, without a legal guardian and hardly any money to his name. He wasn't armed, sir. But someone else was. I know, because I was there too."
"Tell me about that."
"I couldn't see too well because I was far from the incident. I was looking for Sarah, since she said her dad was in a hurry to leave the country or something and that he wanted her to come. No one else. Just her. Mr Cameron is not a nice person."
"And your evidence of his character is?"
"Before this all happened, John B said Ward Cameron was taking him fishing--"
"When he attacked Mr Cameron?"
Jade tries to keep calm and places her hands on the table. "I can promise you that that wasn't what happened. John B had swam to shore from the jet-ski that ran out of fuel to get away from Mr Cameron. He was trying to kill John B. I have never seen John B so confused and terrified in the time that I've known him."
"How long have you known John B?"
"As long as I've known Sarah. A couple weeks or so."
"Tell me more about what you saw when Sheriff Peterkin died. You said someone else shot."
"I'm pretty sure Ward Cameron was going to be arrested by her, is what it looked like. I didn't get to see all of what happened."
"Do you have any idea why Mr Cameron was being arrested?" the officer asks cautiously.
"I think Ward Cameron killed John B's dad, sir."
The officer raises his eyebrows at her, but just before he can get a sentence out, another cop rushes in.
"The girl's gone," he states.
Jade stands up, "Sarah bolted?"
"You stay here," the officer interrogating her orders. "We can't let anymore witnesses leave."
"Sarah's scared. Her dad locked her in her room for hours." Both officers look at her. It was obvious she knew a lot, which worried her. "Please don't tell Ward Cameron what I know."
"We're going to find your friend, and hopefully we can clear this all up."
"She won't come. She's too afraid of him just like everyone else involved is. He's a bad person," Jade pauses. "Let me go find her. She'll only come back if I bring her."
"We can't let you do that, Miss."
"Where's my daughter?" Ward's voice comes from the opposite direction. With the officers turned towards the madman, Jade takes the opportunity to run.
