*Knock knock knock*
As the repeated sound of knocking echoes throughout my room, I finally muster up the strength to get up from my comfortable bed and answer the door.
Me: "Y-yeah?"
Two large men with a calm demeanour are at my door.
Man 1: "Your father requests your presence in his study after breakfast"
I rub my eyes and blink a few times before processing his words.
Me: "Y-yeah, thanks.." I say mid yawn.
I close the door to get ready for school and then proceed to head downstairs for breakfast.
—
Soon after, I found myself outside my fathers study.
I knock on the door and wait whilst seeing the two men who had woken me up earlier who both stare straight ahead guarding the door without acknowledging me at all.
(Rude)
I stand there pouting at the floor and then moments later, the door opens and I'm told to go inside.
—
My father, who seems to be finishing up an important phone call, gestures me with his hand to take a seat in front of him.
He looks as if he had been awake the whole night as the bags under his eyes became evident in my line of sight.
His phone call ends and with a serious expression as he takes a seat at his desk and looks at me with eyes full of concern.
Father: "Something has come up and I won't be able to come home for a few days at a time. I have some important business to take care of that cannot be avoided and I may not able to see you on your 18th birthday .."
The blank expression on my face remains the same.
(Not surprised..)
—
Ever since my mother died, my priority hasn't exactly been at the top for him.
I don't even know what he does that is so urgent, as he has hidden everything from me and refuses to tell me regardless of the amount of times I have tried to bring it up in casual conversation.
I was only 3 when my mother fell ill whilst with child.
Unfortunately, during child birth, both my mother and my sibling did not make it and nothing has been the same ever since.
Although we all have our own ways of grieving, the way my father dealt with it was to drown himself in his work thus giving little time to grieve for his wife and unborn child.
As I got older, I grew to learn the importance of how much my father wanted a son to carry on his surname and to continue our family legacy.. but to his disappointment, he was given a daughter whom he had no idea what to do with.
Nevertheless, I was being taken care of by the family maid and my fathers most loyal butler who took care of all my needs, as his absence became a normality.
Though the news didn't seem to be much of a shock, I have already endured multiple birthdays without him, so this one coming up wouldn't make much of a difference.
—
Me: "That's fine, I didn't feel like having a birthday anyway, so it kinda works out.."
With a wry smile on my face, I go to stand up and excuse myself until he waves a hand out to stop me.
Father: "Your curfew is to remain in my absence and I will be appointing you with a 24/7 bodyguard"
My eyes widen as he mentions this.
Father: "You will not disobey me even while I am away. You'll be watched from all directions so do not do anything that will put yourself in danger"
He continues to look at me with a serious expression as I sigh heavily at the idea of being monitored.
Father: "I'll be leaving this afternoon, so I will see you when I return"
And with that, he nods at his security to which they usher me out without even getting to respond to my father.
—
(I didn't even get to say bye..)
A pang in my chest as I head back downstairs pouting once again to collect my things for school, when our family butler approaches with a neatly packed box.
Hiroki: "Miss Ivy, you need not forget your lunch"
Standing at 6"4, this slender, very smart and well dressed man opens my backpack to place my lunch carefully inside.
Me: "Hiro.."
My eyes water at this small gesture, to which he responds with a soft smile and hands me his pocket square to dry my eyes.
Hiroki: "Miss Ivy, your transportation is outside and you will be picked up after school and brought back here to continue your studies."
I nod and proceed to go outside where there seems to be more security than usual..
