Chapter 1
The school halls were quiet too quiet i could hear ever step i took as i walk down the corridor… the few students remaining in school, kept to themselves for fear of catching the disease. though many of us had gotten shots to prevent it from infecting us. i myself have lost many friends… and my brothers to this mysterious disease. entering my almost empty classroom… the teacher didnt seem to be there his desk empty and neat... the five or six students that were here, Remained seated, heads down, i myself sit in my seat, which was particularly close too the large glass windows that gaze out at the parking lot, looking out the window i sigh, it was raining perfect for the depressing atmosphere of this diseased town.
…many people left there jobs, deciding on staying home in what they believed was safe, most times it was not of any help. i scoff to myself as my thoughts begin to wander, the police had become strict, enforcing curfews over the towns citizens if found out past curfew you would be jailed for god knows how long. The rain slid down the glass slowly my eyes following the moving droplets. A teacher enters, softly gazing at the remaining students he had with a frown, i knew exactly what he was thinking… and i had to agree we were a sad sorry bunch of teens, the silence grew Heavy weighing down upon all of us as we stare at the man who we assumed was our teacher… the man's voice instilled fear into my very being
“there has been a death on campus… please… stay here “
my eyes travel to my other peers faces, they all had gone pale they must have the same thoughts as me… they looked almost lifeless as they stare at each other in fear, the sort of fear that only Death could bring.
a scream echoes from the hall sending shivers down our spines as we watch the teacher run out of the baren classroom, leaving the five of us alone in once again a heavy unyielding silence my eyes stare at the door…every fiber of my being telling to stay right where i was in my seat…But i was curious, maybe it was the scream… or the thought that death was knocking on my very door. My body moved on its own, before i knew it, my hand rested on the cold handle of the door. i glance back back at the other Teens, they all stare at me as if telling me to go back to my seat and forget the curiosity that was gnawing at me… my hand continues slowly turning the metal handle, opening the door eerily slowly with the dull creek that sent shivers down my spine i turn, slowly i lean out gazing down both ends of the all till i saw it… at the end of the hall too the right of the classroom a girl no older then 15 lay lifelessly on the ground the scent... i could even smell it from here burning my nostrils i felt like i was going to throw up…
i slam the door shut and puke into the nearby trash can, trembling as i grip the sides of the bin. As i stand shakily i turn to my peers who stare, one finally speaks her voice trembling as much as her body.
“... what did you see?”
i can hear my heart pounding in my ears, i try to speak but i can't form the words. Instead i stare blankly at the girl now infront of me. she offers a hand this gesture makes me stare even more as no one hand ever dared to touch echother… out of fear i guess, as she helps me too my seat the others gather around as we form a small group dragging desks to form a makeshift table. My lips twitch into a smile Something i haven't done in a long time
“you… you all have your shots right? “
the girl who helped me her name was Zoey i think asked softly. everyone nodded confirming we had all been vaccinated… the shots were supposed to protect us it seemed to do the trick on the kids and teens...the adults immunes systems however rejected it… most that took it died a few hours after being injected… i steal a glance at the closed door
“i think that girl wasn't vaccinated...to think a parent would do that…”
i mutter dryly turning my eyes to my peers, they all nod slowly in agreement i didn't understand parents why would they risk there children's lives over something as stupid as disliking vaccines then again would i ever have the chance to even understand.the silence fell over the room again..it was heavy it felt almost hard to breath our eyes glancing between echother
“so..now what”
the boy at the end of the makeshift table Brian asks, these people are kids i barely knew, each of from different clicks, the tension was so thick it could be cut with a sword...i spoke up finally having enough of the dreaded silence
“any of you… want to play a card game or something?”
the five look at each other zoey finally speaks up
“s-sure”
she stuttered….i hope she's alright ...then again they we all probably look a bit shaken. I slowly stand moving to the closet, i pull open the doors slowly listening to there weak creaking, it was full of board games and cards none of it was clean all with a layer of dust i grab a set of playing cards dusting them off before moving back to the group slipping into my chair.. More screams fill our ears echoing in the empty halls and mostly empty classroom it hurts to listen to. a girl… Kiara pulls out her phone and speaker playing some music slowly placing the cards down i take a glance out the window a simple cross rests on the wall directly beside the window...religion had up and disappeared, what god would kill millions of innocent men...women...children.. It shook the country to there cores. i hated it..my attention is drawn back to the group as we begin playing goldfish. Slowly we all began talking taking our time to introduce ourselves, there where six of us in total, Me or well Mackenzie I'm a sophomore short blonde hair that reached my shoulders my eyes a dill steel grey and my skin was much to pale, which was natural to me. Zoey a sophomore with long black hair and beautiful steel blue eyes. Brian a junior with messy brown hair and emerald green eyes he had a pair of simple glasses as well. Kiara a freshman who has black curly hair tan skin, and these chocolate brown eyes freckles dotted across her small nose. Justin a senior he had black Slicked back hair Vivid electric blue eyes. Finally Jason another senior messy dirty blonde hair that was never kept neat it was slightly curly and fell into his perfect forest green eyes his skin a bit tan like hes been out in the sun alot.Though It wasn't long Mabey an hour before our music filled room and soft game of go fish was interrupted, our eyes drawn to the door as three teachers enter, each looking very disheveled and rather stressed
“come on kids time to head home”
The female teacher Mrs.Jackson states in a shaky rushed Voice.
we each take a moment, glancing at echother before standing, leaving our cards on the makeshift table, grabbing our book bags we leave...the bus ride home was silent like always the uncomfortable weight slightly lifted though...who knew how many more would be killed by this epedemic i close my eyes for a moment...this was true chaos and i didn't like it. My forehead was leaned against the cool damp glass watching the rain tap against the buses glass.
