IN WHICH Lucas Sinclair learns Sign Language to communicate with the new student

FOR THE FIRST thirteen years of her life, Erin Callaghan has been perfectly content with being homeschooled by her parents, and so where they- until they decided that she had to attend Hawkins Middle for the last year of middle school to learn how to socialize with people her age.
FOR THE MOST part, Erin understood. Even though her parents weren't short on money, they still couldn't afford to keep homeschooling her- after all, they had jobs outside of their household. But the fact that she could understand her parents' motivations didn't mean that she was happy with their decision.
HAWKINS WAS A very old-fashioned town. No one except her family knew Sign, especially not the teachers. The other kids used to follow her around and make noises to test if she really couldn't hear until her twin brother put a stop to it. So, her expectations for Hawkins Middle weren't high. She was ready to sit in the back of the classroom and to sit alone at lunch when her brother had detention once again.
AT FIRST, EVERYTHING was exactly how Erin imagined it. The other students avoided her and pointed at her when they thought she wouldn't notice, but that was about it. Until, one day, a boy walks up to her and asks her if he eat lunch with her- in Sign Language. When she accepts his offer, she doesn't expect to get dragged into a world full of parallel universes, monsters and baseball bats, but neither does she expect to fall for the boy.

—— okay so erin lost her hearing when she was very young and her family did her best to support her. they learned ASL, started homeschooling her and even offered to get her a speech therapist, but she refused bc it made her feel uncomfortable
—— her twin brother is played by noah jupe bc why not. he's a very troubled kid who always gets into fights at school and stuff so he always has to serve detention when he's supposed to be having lunch. he's also very protective of erin even though he's the younger twin
—— her parents decide to send her to hawkins middle for eight grade but tell her that she doesn't have to start high school if it's really that bad. at first she definitely doesn't want to but then lucas ✨comes into her life✨
—— so basically he always watched her at school and wanted to talk to her because he felt bad for her and bc he knows what it's like to be an outsider but he didn't know how to do it. so he went to the library and searched for books about ASL. he practiced for a while and around the time the plot of season 2 starts he asks her if he can sit with her at lunch
—— the others are pretty accepting expect mike bc he's emo which causes ✨tension✨ between him and lucas
—— lucas still tries to befriend max and has his moments w/ her, he's just not romantically interested!!
—— if you want erin's brother to have a love interest it could be max or will 👀
