francesca laurent-thompson had always dreamed of owning her own bakery. she had grown up surrounded by baking. her dads owned their bakery and they had always told their adopted daughter that it would be hers in the future if she wanted it but for now, she was stuck on serving duty.
francesca always dreamed of the day that her dads passed the business down to her. she couldn't wait until she could spend all day in a kitchen baking without needing a reason. she wanted nothing more than to bake sweet treats for her customers and see the business strive.
"francesca! we need you out front!" her father, andrew, yelled from the other end of the kitchen. the girl wiped the flour from her hands onto her apron before walking through to the front of the shop where she saw the long line of customers.
"hi, welcome to queens of treats, what can i get for you today?" francesca smiled at the first customer in the long line, seeing that she was an elderly woman.
"i'll take a chocolate muffin for my grandson, dear." the frail looking woman gave the younger one a smile and francesca made sure that she packaged up the cake for her before continuing with the transaction.
francesca worked as fast as she could to serve the line that was thankfully becoming a little bit smaller.
"i'll take over after this customer and you can clear the tables, mon étoile." her other father, louis, came up behind her, resting his hands on her shoulders as she nodded her head and turning back towards her last customer.
"hi, welcome to queens of treats, what can i get for you today?" francesca looked up and her eyes met the ones of a really attractive boy. he was quite tanned with brunette hair slicked back. his eyes were a deep, chocolate colour and francesca had to admit that he was stunning.
"just one of your best pastries, please." his brummie accent was strong and the young girl got straight to work. she packaged up one of the pain au chocolats that her dad, louis, had made since he was french.
"i'll finish up, we need you on tables." louis took over from his daughter, handing her a damp cloth and a disinfectant spray to wipe down the tables with.
as she walked over to her first table, she tripped over someone's foot and almost knocked over the table as a result.
"sorry about that." the brunette boy from earlier looked at the girl who served him. she was pretty. she had long hair that flowed down her back that matched the colour of caramel. her eyes were a dark hazel colour and they were accented by her use of eyeliner.
francesca sprayed the tables and wiped them down so that they were ready for the next customers to use.
"excuse me, can you wipe down this table?" the brunette girl turned at the sound of the voice and found the same boy from earlier. he was sitting at the only table that hadn't been cleaned with his pastry and a cup of coffee sitting in front of him.
"sure." she mumbled. she had just spent the last ten minutes cleaning all of the tables and he had chosen to sit at the only one that hadn't been cleaned.
after she wiped down the table, he moved his hand and spilt his coffee all over the clean table and francesca's shoes.
"oh, i'm sorry about that." his brummie accent sounded and francesca tried her best not to show her irritation. she could feel the warm coffee seeping through her canvas shoes and her socks, getting through to her feet.
"it's okay, don't worry about it." francesca forced him a smile as she cleaned the table for the second time in the space of three minutes.
"what's your name?" he asked, intrigued as to who she was.
"francesca." she put the cloth into the pocket of her apron and used the back of her hand to try and push the stray hairs that had fallen from her ponytail, back off her face.
"jack." he gave her a smile and she simply nodded her head before heading to the back of the bakery to grab the brush so that she could sweep and get rid of all the fallen crumbs from cakes and other sweet treats.
jack didn't know why the girl was so unbothered by him. it hadn't happened before. usually girls would be throwing themselves at his feet just for a little bit of attention. it bothered him that such a pretty girl paid so little attention to him in his home town where he was known for captaining the local football club.
"frankie, before you go out to sweep up again, could you take this tea to emilia?" andrew asked his daughter, seeing as her face lit up at the mention of her best friend.
"you know i can." she grabbed the mug from him as carefully as she could and walked over to her blonde best friend, almost forgetting about her soggy feet.
"fran!" the blonde girl squealed at the sight of her best friend, ignoring her messy appearance due to busy day that she had had.
"how's work been?" the pair had met when they both attended the same university and although they studied different courses, they shared a love of the same sport and became friends through the athletics team.
francesca proceeded to tell emilia about the hectic day that she had had, remembering to tell her about her annoying customer, jack.
"hold on, is that him over there?" emilia pointed to the boy who was still sitting at the same table, taking pictures of himself on his phone.
"yes." the brunette girl groaned at seeing how vain he must be.
"that's jack grealish, he plays for aston villa." it was clear for everyone to see that emilia was beginning to fangirl and freak out a little at the realisation that jack grealish was in her friend's bakery.
"anyway, i need to get back to work." as francesca stood up and made her way back over to the till, emilia watched as jack's eyes followed the brunette. emilia wasn't cupid but she was a pretty good match maker.
emilia walked over to jack's table and sat down in front of him. she grabbed the napkin from beside him and took out a pen from her handbag. jack watched with curious eyes as the blonde girl scribbled down a bunch of numbers.
"francesca's number. instead of being a lovesick puppy, you should text her sometime." and with that, emilia was gone and jack was left to continue to steal glances at the brunette girl who was serving customers with a bright smile on her face.
