"That's it!" Makoto exclaimed, voice echoing through the makeshift courtroom. "The Mastermind behind this killing game has to be Jin Kirigiri, the former principle of Hope's Peak Academy!"
The shocked reactions were immediate from everyone in the room. Everyone except, of course, for Kyoko. The girl in question was staring, stone-faced, at the black and white bear sitting on its throne away from the trial.
Monokuma was silent for several seconds, even when all eyes were on him. Makoto felt as if he was suffocating in it, the anticipation. He stared at Monokuma with rapt attention as the bear began to chuckle.
His high pitched laugh bounced off the walls of the trial room, subjecting the students ears to piercing pain as Monokuma nearly doubled over with the force of his own amusement. Makoto was shaking by the time the laughter finally subsided.
"Wow..." Monokuma managed through what was left of his giggles. "You're a lot smarter than you look, Naegi."
The sentence was punctuated with a hissing noise coming from the walls around them. The students looked around frantically for the source of the unfamiliar noise, when their vision was almost immediately obscured by a thick white smoke. Makoto, on instinct, held his breath to avoid inhaling whatever was flooding the room. The breath was forcefully knocked out of him when a voice pierced through the fog.
"Congratulations, everyone!" The voice was entirely unfamiliar, despite it filling the room with ease like the smoke that hid him just out of sight.
As if on command, the film around the room dissipated with the echo of the man's voice, revealing the face to match it.
Jin Kirigiri stood proud in a black and white suit, mimicking his mascot. Black hair was tightly cut around his scalp, barely making it past his forehead. Makoto noticed that his eyes with the same lavender color as Kyoko's, but there were no other similarities.
Jin's face was cut into a big smile, showing off his blinding white teeth. His hands rested firmly on his hips in a powerful stance, and his expression radiated positivity.
For some strange reason, Makoto truly couldn't see this man as the one who caused so much pain and suffering. Had he been present in any other situation, Makoto would've assumed he was the friendliest man in the room.
"Great work on uncovering the mystery! I'm so proud of you all!" Jin proclaimed, smiling impossibly wider. The students stayed completely silent for a while afterwards, trying to make sense of the scene.
"... Proud?" Kyoko eventually prompted. Her expression was as stoic as ever, if a little suspicious. Her father nodded his head furiously in response to her words.
"Of course! I am your principal, after all! I'm absolutely thrilled with your intellectual prowess!" He said kindly.
"And you, Kyoko, are just as inquisitive as I remember!" The detective scowled a bit at that remark, looking him up and down briefly, but not replying to his ramblings.
"Can we pump the fuckin' breaks for a second, here?" Mondo suddenly exclaimed. Makoto nearly jumped out of his skin at the others naturally loud voice. He had almost forgotten what they were in the courtroom for.
Mondo was looking directly at Makoto, eyebrows furrowed and hand running through his hair in frustration and confusion.
"You said his name was Jin Kirigiri?" He asked. Makoto pursed his lips and nodded hesitantly. Now that he had time to allow his brain to catch up, he worried about what the others would have to say to Kyoko now that the secret had been revealed.
Mondo looked over to the detective with an incredulous look on his face.
"Dude... your related to this freak?" Kyoko was completely unfazed. She didn't even look in Mondo's direction, keeping her gaze firmly on Jin.
"Yes. He's my father," she responded. This time, Mondo turned his head to the mastermind in question, who met his gaze and nodded with enthusiasm.
"You- You sick son of a bitch!" Mondo howled, white-knuckled hands gripping his podium in barely restrained fury. "You put your kid in a killing game? Your own flesh and blood?" Mondo was trembling, now, and Makoto was certain that his vision was doused in red.
"I swear to whatever god might be up there, if you weren't hiding behind your dumbass spears, I'd kill you with my bare fuckin' hands!"
Perhaps it was fear, or sympathy, that drove Makoto's feet forward. He made his way quickly behind Aoi's podium, and wordlessly placed his hand on Mondo's shoulder to calm him. Mondo said nothing, but the tension in his shoulders eased ever so slightly.
Jin smiled through the display, eyes bright and darting between each of the students. Makoto could see it clearly now, the unhinged glint it his eye. There was, undoubtedly, something horribly wrong with the man who claimed to be Jin Kirigiri.
"I know it seems heartless, but I assure you it's quite the opposite!" Jin said heartily. "I didn't want Kyoko to die, of course. I simply wanted her to see!"
For the first time since the trial began, Kyoko's expression betrayed her emotions. Her eyes widened ever so slightly, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Her head tilted away from her father just enough to be noticeable.
"You wanted me... to see," She repeated. Her features seemed to have set like concrete in this new expression as her jaw formed a firm, unyielding line, and her eyes narrowed.
Jin nodded once again, humming his affirmation. His hands moved off of his hips to grasp at the podium in front of him.
"You've felt it, haven't you?" He asked. "That all-encompassing, writhing despair?"
Every muscle in Makoto's body froze at that word: despair. That was something Monokuma had said during their fist day here, wasn't it? The notion had been terrifying enough back then. But now... now it sent a terrible, hollowed feeling to the pit of his stomach.
"That's perfect!" Jin's voice snapped him out of his thoughts. "You don't have to worry, my darling daughter. I've felt it, too."
He was still talking to Kyoko, as if he'd forgotten that everyone else could still hear him. He'd starting leaning forward as much as he could, trying to close the distance of the courtroom between himself and his daughter. Somehow, despite Makoto believing it wasn't possible, Jin smiled wider.
"He has too many teeth..." Was the first thought that came to Makoto's mind.
"All that's left now is to embrace it, like I have," Jin continued. He stretched his hand toward Kyoko, as if he wanted her to take it. Makoto fought the urge to put himself between her and the man at the podium. "Then, you and I can be together again. Just like old times."
Kyoko reeled backwards as if the outstretched hand had something vile in it. Her nose scrunched up in disgust, but her eyes remained locked on the pair that looked so much like her own.
Jin's wide grin softened. His lips moved to cover his teeth, something that Makoto was highly grateful for, and he replaced his hand to its previous position on the podium.
"I understand. I was nervous at first, too," he said gently. He straightened his posture once again, finally addressing the rest of the room. "How about a deal, then?"
Byakuya scoffed, drawing everyone's attention. His arms were crossed and his eyes were set in a firm glare.
"What makes you think I make deals with anyone? Especially with what can only be described as homicidal maniacs?" He quipped. Jin's smile was back in full force. Makoto subconsciously moved closer to Mondo as a shiver shot down the length of his spine.
"What makes you think you have a choice in the matter?"
