The rest of second period I spent uncomfortably squirming in my seat, itching to pull my phone back out and look further into the app on my phone.
Beep
I stuffed the syllabus from the class into my backpack and quickly walked out, tuning out all of the excess noise. I weaved through the crowd of students moving to their next class and headed to the gymnasium. A long line of freshman boys stood at a small table piled high with gym uniforms. The coach was handing out uniforms based on size.
"Hey Link, over here!" Jason called out to me from the end of the line.
Oh good, no butting.
"Did we need money today?" I asked, looking toward the coach.
"Mmhm. Don't worry, I've got you and Rocco covered," Alec said, flashing a small stack of cash proudly.
Well, I do have that $35, if it's real...But I'm not sure I want to risk giving the coach counterfeit money. Could get in a lot of trouble...
"Thanks amigo," Rocco said, patting him on the shoulder.
"Y-Yeah, thanks...I appreciate it..." My face flushed as I remembered how poor my family is.
"I hope gym in high school isn't as hard as it was in middle school," Jason said hopefully, forcing his glasses up again.
"Hey-Can I talk to you guys about something?" I said abruptly.
I have to tell them about this thing.
"You okay, amigo?" Rocco asked, meeting my eyes with concern.
"Y-Yeah, it's just...When I was getting ready for school this morning, this weird app appeared on my phone. It gave me a quest to get to school on time, with a countdown timer for 8 AM."
The three of them looked at me with heightened interest.
"When I got here, the quest auto-completed, and it gave me a couple rewards. Then, it gave me a couple more after that. Like-Like one was to apologize to Jason for making fun of him for calling me fat-"
"Hey, you apologized to complete a quest? The hell man?" Jason griped, clearly offended.
"N-No, I really felt bad-That's not the point. The point is it's given me specific quests. Like, things someone would have to be watching me to know-But it's more complicated than that, because it sent me to the restroom and I just happened to bump into Mia as she was about to break down crying. Like it was watching her too-I don't know, it's really weird, guys," I stumbled over my words as I tried to explain.
"Have you noticed anybody following you around?" Alec questioned, peering around the gym.
"I haven't really been paying attention, but...No?" I replied.
"Well...What were the rewards for completing the quests...?" He continued.
"That's the other thing..." I said, reaching into my pocket and pulling out the $35.
Their eyes all lit up at the sight of the money.
"You're serious," Alec said, eyeing up the money.
I handed it to him, "Does it look real to you?"
He scanned it briefly, shrugged and handed it back, "I dunno. We could run by the bank after school today and ask them what they think."
"I-I dunno-" I started, my nerves rising.
He grinned and patted my shoulder, "Don't worry, I'll do all the talking. Did your phone like, print it out or something?"
I shook my head, "No, it-"
