Another day, another orphanage. Its like they're bouncing me around all over the country, just to see when I'll break. But they have no need to fear. I escaped from the last 12 orphanages and foster homes, and I can escape this one too. At least that was what I thought, before we arrived and my life turned upside down.

It all started when strangers came to pick me up instead of Katherine. Katherine is the lady that always comes to find me and drag me off somewhere else when I run away. These people were different. They wore black suits and sunglasses and a sort of "FBI" feel to them. I was getting a bad feeling about this, and my feelings are usually correct.

I wasn't wrong. The second the strange men in black saw me, they made a beeline for me across the beach. The beach is my favorite place to go when I run away. The sound of the ocean soothes me, and the sand is way softer than gravel in an alley. But today was different. There was something in the air, some kind of tension, like a storm about to break. I could feel it, and it scared me.

When the men started coming towards me, my instincts kicked in. I turned and ran for as far and as fast as I could. I had the advantage at first, because I was small and fast and knew the beach well. But when I got to the end of the beach and was forced to bushwhack, their greater strength gave them the advantage and they overtook me quickly. They dragged me back out to the beach and over to the parking lot. I screamed as loudly as I could, and made a scene, but it was no use. Anyone who tried to help was stopped by the agents.

They dragged me out to a big black SUV and threw me in a heap on the back seat. Two of the men climbed into the driver and passenger doors and the rest climbed into a sleek black sedan that was parked next to our SUV. I sat up slowly and groaned as they put the car in gear and shot out of the parking lot. "Where are you taking me?" I groaned.

The man driving grunted and ignored me but the other man looked back at me. "I'm sorry, but I can't tell you that. You and I both know that. You'll find out when we get there." He said, shrugging apologetically.

"Whatever you say..." I muttered and leaned back in my seat. This was going to be a long trip.

About an hour later we arrived at our mysterious destination. The two men that had driven me here helped me climb out of the car and escorted me inside. They introduced themselves as agents Maverick Turcott and Theo Jackson. They escorted me to a plush looking waiting room. "Wait here, please." They instructed me, "The coordinator will be here soon, and she will explain everything to you."

I was half asleep by the time the so-called coordinater arrived. "Hello there!!" A strange and falsely cheerful voice said behind me.

"Ahh!" I screamed in shock. I jerked awake and whipped around to face her. She had long wavy blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes.

"I didn't mean to startle  you, I'm sorry," she said with a false-sounding laugh. "Welcome to SHIELD!"

I froze. What? "I'm sorry, I don't understand..." I said with a feeling of dread growing inside me.

She walked in front of me and pulled me up so that I was standing in front of her. "Please follow me!" She said, still with a fake smile plastered on her face.

She led me down another winding maze of passages to a wooden door with 'C. Evangelis' engraved on a bronze plaque mounted on the door. She opened the door and motioned for me to enter the room. Cautiously, I walked in and stood awkwardly just inside the doorway. The room appeared to be an office, and a nice one at that. As well as a desk and chair, the room was full of comfortable chairs and had priceless paintings all over the walls. The lady, whom I assumed was C. Evangelis, followed me in and motioned for me to sit in one of the numerous chairs. I sat down reluctantly and waited for her to speak.

"My name is Miss Catherine Evangelis. I know you must be feeling really confused right now, Skye, but I will explain everything to you. Let's start off with where you are. You are currently at a secure SHIELD base in an undisclosed location. This particular base also houses an orphanage. SHIELD, in case you do not know, stands for Secure Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. It is a government based organization that deals with mostly supernatural security threats. We have been in contact with your social worker and believe that you could be an asset to us. For one thing, it would be safer for you, because it is next to impossible to run away. Also, we believe that you have special skills that could make you an extraordinary agent. So you will now be residing with us, permanently. It was nice to meet you, Skye, and I hope you will enjoy living at Shield."

With that, she got up abruptly and left the room. I sat there awkwardly in silence, unsure of what to do, until Agent Turcott entered the room. "Hello Skye, it's nice to see you again. If you would please follow me, I will lead you to your room."

Agent Turcott escorted me to a plain looking dorm room in a much less fancy looking wing of the base. As I entered the room, he smiled and said, "This is where you will be staying for the next while. I'll see you around, Skye."

With that, he left the room, and my life at SHIELD began.

A/N:

Sorry for the crazy amount of flip flopping in between Skylar and Skye's POVs, but that will happen less and less the farther into the story I get. It's only necessary at the beginning.
