Shock ripples in waves through me, starting small and getting bigger when I try to wrap my mind around his question.

"What do I look like, an insane person?"

He smiles a charming smile. "Look, I know that this is unexpected--"

"Go see a clinical psychologist."

He uses one hand to gesture at himself, keeping the other securely on the wheel. "A lot of girls would like to get some of this--"

"Did you tell them that most optometrists offer free eye exams?"

His chuckle is a low sound, but it doesn't send shivers across my skin like a certain other billionaire's. "Let me finish. My parents are coming over and I really need to show them that I am not a total recluse."

I frown, my brows furrowing. "Ask Sagan for one. Isn't he always with another woman? What?" I ask defensively when he shoots me a confused look. "Didn't he and Renee Corbett have a relationship? They were eating together for like a week."

As much as I wouldn't like to admit it, I was glad when he stopped seeing Renee Corbett. There was something grating about it, even though there isn't anything between Sagan and I anymore.

Spencer scoffs. "As if. Sagan hasn't been romantically linked to a woman for as long as I've known him."

"Oh."

"So what do you say? Make me not only the hottest but also the happiest man on earth?"

"What's in it for me?"

He considers my question for a moment, rubbing the stubble on his jaw in mock thought. "You can skip a day of work."

I stare at him, mouth agape. "How do you know that I've been...?"

"Sweetheart, a blind man could see that you're avoiding him."

I slump down in my seat. "Fine."

His smile blinds me with its brightness. "Great. I'll pick you up from work tomorrow at five. Wear something next. Actually, no, scratch that. I'll bring you something."

Sagan stops at my desk, surprising me. His dark eyes survey me with intensity. A shiver goes down my spine, and I'm sure it's not because of the temperature.

"Why are you leaving at five?"

I force my face to remain neutral. "Why do you care?"

He messes up his hair by running a hand through it, something I've noticed he does when he is nervous or frustrated.

"I just want to be sure you're safe."

"Of course she'll be safe. She'll be my heavily muscled self, after all." Spencer's voice startles Sagan into taking a step back, severing the connection between the two of us.
