At seventeen, Shikamaru Nara saw himself as an ordinary-looking guy—not too tall, short, neither too skinny nor muscular, with an average build that allowed him to blend into the background. His long dark hair and lazy expression made him look tired. He cherished his sleep, so when someone persistently knocked on his window, he tried to ignore it. The rhythmic tapping became louder and more irritating, forcing him to sit up reluctantly.

"Alright, alright. I give up. I'm coming!" he muttered, pushing back the curtains to reveal an annoyed ANBU staring back at him through a walrus mask.

"You are summoned by the Hokage to be in her office immediately," the ANBU announced before disappearing.

Shikamaru sighed as he scratched the back of his head. "Troublesome," he mumbled. "The ANBU didn't even say why the Hokage needs me." Then he closed the window.

Dragging his feet, Shikamaru went to his closet and grabbed his usual attire—a black long-sleeved shirt with fishnet underneath, traditional shinobi pants, sandals, and his Chunin vest. He preferred to wear his headband on his right shoulder rather than on his forehead, finding it less of a bother.

Next, he headed to the bathroom. He brushed his teeth with slow, deliberate motions, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep. Then he tied his hair into the signature Nara ponytail.  Despite his apparent lethargy, Shikamaru maintained a certain level of meticulousness in his routine.

He exited his room and went to the kitchen, where his parents were already awake. His father, Shikaku, was seated at the table, engrossed in the morning newspaper.

"Good morning, son," Shikaku greeted without looking up.

"Hi, Dad," Shikamaru replied with a yawn, his eyes still half-closed.

"Why are you up so early?" his mother, Yoshino, asked. "You just got back last night," she added, setting a plate of toast on the table.

"Probably another mission," Shikamaru said, his voice tinged with resignation. "I'll be back later," he added as he headed towards the door.

"But what about breakfast?" Yoshino called after him, a hint of frustration in her voice.

"Not hungry!" Shikamaru responded over his shoulder. Then he left.

Shikamaru considers his life to be average. His usual daily routine when he isn't being a chunin is pretty dull for most people. He likes playing Shogi with his father and watching the clouds. Both help calm his brain. Then, on the weekends, he would meet his former team for food. Not only that, he also helps his father with clan issues. Pretty dull and predictable.

Shikamaru is pretty comfortable being an average guy. He doesn't worry about being the best; he can just focus on being average. Most people have told him that if he used his brain, he could do more, but that doesn't really sound too appealing to him.
