A'leah

I killed the engine as I parked in Miss.Ruby's driveway. This cold fall weather was really annoying me.

My coat was practically falling apart and I haven't bought a new one yet. I quickly got out and rushed towards her front door as she allowed me in.

"Good morning Leah." Her hair was in rollers and she had house slippers on with a silk robe.

"Good morning Miss.Ruby how are you?" I took my coat off and hung it up on the rack.

She slowly entered the kitchen sitting at the table. The smell of banana bread lingered throughout the room.

"I'm just blessed that God woke me up this morning. I done started the banana bread and sugar cookies. You hungry?

I can whip up something real quick. I don't even need ta' ask if your hard-headed behind ate because you didn't and can't tell me otherwise.

So what your gonna do is start the beignets and ice those cupcakes for me while I get breakfast started. The banana bread is almost done too."

"Can't nothing get passed you Miss.Ruby, you know me so well." She smiled and started scrambling eggs.

"Chile I know you too well. I done told you about calling me Miss. I'm not kno' stranger to you."

"Fine, mama Ruby." She smiled in satisfaction and started put a tray of biscuits in the oven.

"That sounds alot better than Miss Ruby so I'll take it." I smiled and grabbed the powder and honey out of the cabinets.

Every since I moved down here, Miss.Ruby has been like a mother to me. She's guided me into the right direction as a mother should.

When I was broken and hurt about how my parents treated me, she said something that made me open my eyes a little.

"You can't help who you love, but you can help how you love. There's nothing wrong with being with that boy. So what he got tattoos and a record? He's trying to change for he better. It takes a real man to be willing to change for the better. Lil boys stay slangin' dope in those streets and end up on death row by tomorrow. If he treats you right and you love him I'm all for it. But don't allow your parents to take control of you. They've be controlling you since you came into this world. Now that your life is in your hands, it's up to you to do whatchu want with it. They were wrong for stopping those tuition payments, but A'leah you'll be opening that private practice someday. Just have faith in God and just know that he will make a way."

I grew up as an ambitious person. Every since I was a little girl, I dreamt of being so many things. Just to have your parents get in the way of your dreams coming true hurts.

How could they do that to me? You don't hurt your child like that, especially when you encourage them to follow their dreams.

I quickly wiped my eyes and took out the banana bread, carefully setting it onto the counter.

"Leah come on, bring it in. I know your crying." Mama Ruby sat the food onto the dining room table. I quietly took a seat across from her.

"Yes ma'am. This food smells delicious, you didn't have to make all of this food for us."

"Girl just eat, I know your hungry and tired. Just eat what you can while I talk to you."

After I said my grace, I fixed my plate and started eating. Grillades and grits were one of my favorite breakfast dishes. I hadn't eaten this since August and I moved down here.
