“Hadley! Had-ley!” Ash ran up behind me and tugged on my backpack playfully. I smiled.
“Ya, Ash?”
“Girl, where have you been? I’ve been looking for you all day. You weren’t even on the bus!” He ran his fingers through his dirty blonde hair and grinned down at me.
“I was just super tired this morning and slept through my alarm, so I got driven in.” I shurgged it off, not wanting to make a big deal out of it.
Ash nodded, already talking to me about something totally unrelated. We were discussing Taylor Swift’s new album on our way to AP Lit when it happened.
I froze.
“Ash” I said, but it came out as a whisper. My vision went black and I gasped. My eyes flew open and directly in front of me was the teen from my dreams. His face was hidden by the darkness of a shadow, but I could tell he was crouched down, as if he was hiding from something. He began to move. Before I could see his face, I was back in the hallway, with Ash waving his hand in front of me.
“Hadley, what the hell?” He stared at me with genuine worry as people shoved past us, desperate to get to their next class.
“Ash, I’m okay.” Blinking, I tried to get focused. I wasn’t totally lying. I couldn’t shake the feeling of fear entirely, but having Ash next to me somehow made it better. I was fine.
Ash, however, looked anything but fine. “Had, what just happened? Did you black out? Can you see?”
“Ash, I’m fine! Just got a bit distracted for a second” I laughed a bit, trying to play it cool. “Ready for APLit?” I started walking to the class again. Ash grabbed my arm and looked me in the eye.
“You’d tell me if something was wrong?” He stared at me with deeply affectionate eyes. I smiled sweetly
“Who else would I tell, Ash? You’re, like, my one and only friend. Or at least the only friend who gets me.”
“OK.” He looked away, making my stomach drop. How could I turn this around?
“Ash…Nothing is wrong. I was thinking about who your Bae should be.”
“Since when do you use words like bae?” He grinned. “Something is wrong with you, isn’t it?” He laughed, and I smiled. Crisis averted I thought with a smile.
~~**~*~**~~
Bright light momentarily blinded me as the sun glared down at me. Shielding my eyes with my arm, I surveyed my surroundings. I was on top of a completely silent mountain, blackened by ash. The sun was bright, but it was the only cheerful thing in the scene. Everything was dark and desolate. I began to walk forward, closer and closer to the edge of the mountain, hoping to see the view.
Gasping, I stared at the scene that surrounded the mountain. It looked as if everything was set on fire and trampled. Ruins of buildings and houses laid in front of me, so tiny and far from where I was standing and yet so vivid and real. I covered my mouth with my hand. That was someone’s home. I looked down, not wanting to think about it anymore.
That’s when I saw him. He was grabbing onto the side of the cliff for his life, a few yards below me, struggling to find a way to climb back up. Gasping, I started to climb down to get to him. Grasping the side of the cliff, I shimmied down until I found a semi-decent ledge, just a few feet away from where he was holding on. I screamed to him, but no words came out. I tried again, but nothing came out. I began to reach for his hand, hoping he would see me eventually. I touched his hand and immediately he grasped my wrist without even looking up.
Struggling with his weight, and my inability to lift anything over ten pounds, I tried my hardest to pull him up. He reached with his other hand for mine, and I grasped his own wrist quickly. Somehow not even feeling the weight of him, I began to pull him up. He found a foot hole, and released one of my wrists for a decent hand hold. With a deafening crash, the rock beneath his feet crumbled and broke away. Losing his grip on the wall, he fell downwards.
I screamed, again inaudibly. Our grip was weakening. I reached with my other hand, wanting him to grasp it, but it was too late. He looked up at me, staring with bright blue eyes that were as vibrant as the sun in the darkness of the horrible scenery. But even that brightness was darkened by the reality of fear that settled in them. Just as our eyes locked, he slipped from my grasp. He began to fall straight down into the ruins. I screamed inaudibly and watched in horror as the horrified blue eyes grew smaller and smaller, fading back into the darkness. I reached to no one. I wanted his hands again. I wanted his eyes...I needed to reach him…
I stared at my ceiling, tears in my eyes. I shook violently, his blue eyes staring at me from the corner of my eye. Frightened, I laid there, listening to my clock ticking, thankful for the noise, and trying my hardest to not think about the dream.
