It had only seemed to feel as though she had died a few weeks ago- which was the truth of it- a product of her own intervention.

She could tell no one had wanted to act on her death, she was a beloved monster to the realm, mother and wisdom to all that sought it. It didn't stop her death however. She was never bitter about the fact- her life ending so shortly that is— she had lived it, and the monsters that had to bear the brunt as her executioners were nothing more than innocent in his eyes.

She knew that Asgore would take their secret to the grave. Her king Fluffybuns would keep it, he would shield her from the blame that her death... was what she wanted. He would play the bad guy for her. Toriel had watched it all unfold- as soon as her heavy head hit the snow-ladden ground. She watched the screams, she heard the alarm— she had watched her salvatores flee, Papyrus' skull morphing to shock, watched as the flowerpot hit the ground.

She stared at him clutching her body, wracked with inconsolable sobs, herself drinking in the chaos she created with such a mere thing as her death. Guilt washed over her as she watched on, reaching towards him before he suddenly stood with a gritted scowl, stalking towards the directions the duo had fled. She had started a war-

But that was not her story to tell.

This was.

It wasn't always like this. Even she knew that. Life down in the underground was peaceful, without death- all were content with their lives below the earth- till they came. A human child, a singular human life had made its descent. It was befriended almost immediately as it were only the fawn of the enemy, taken under the wing of her family- till they died. It was a tragic thing. None spoke of the human, nor made any mention of it in fear of the grief that presented itself upon the throne doubling.

However the family comforted to continue... but it only worsened from there. Strangers in a pair of three came to the palace gates. Skeletons. A curious sight in the underground to say the least. They were disturbing to say the least- cracked, cloaked in crimsons and violets, the most cruel, flashing eyes she had ever come across when they were brought forth, bowing before her.

Though she couldn't pass judgements on appearances before they presented their characters. She wasn't the type to. She looked to her king, poised with a ticking brow, deep in contemplation before she touched his paw, patting it. He snapped back to attention, clutching her hand before clearing his throat.

"I-Uhmm *Ahem* It... it seems as though there are three open positions for you to begin! Congratulations!" He grinned heartily, horned head seemingly in another place. Oh how she loved his smile. She beamed down at the new three champions before they were guided away by Undyne with an abrupt shout of: "Get movin' punks-!! We've got training to do! I'm gonna train your asses and strike em' all down, that's a promise!!" She boasted with a cackle before the doors were closed on her, laughs ceasing with a dying echo. That Undyne really was a lively one.

Toriel brought her head to his shoulder with a contented sigh, waiting for Asgore's hand to settle through her fur affectionately as it usually did. It never came. She glanced up, concerned, his face set in a hardened frown as he stared ahead in thought. The sight alone was enough for her to confront his odd behaviour.

"Asy, what's wrong?" She turned to him, paw on his arm comfortingly. He only sighed, a heavy sound coming from the normally jolly monster. "It's... it's nothing." That was the first lie he had ever told her. And it stung- it still did. He normally never kept to himself around her but this— this jutted her away from him in a way that was unimaginable. He swept away from the throne, cloak billowing behind him.
