My dizzy and overly tired self was slowly getting up. As I broke into a huge yawn, stretching out my arms and enjoying the soothing crackle of the cracking of my knuckle and the fingers. Suddenly an ice cold chill ran down my spine as my whole body became alert and stiff. My friends, Hardy and Sam. Was anything of it real? Or was it just a dream?
I frantically started to search for my phone, flaying my arms around on the mattress. As I jumped off the bed on to the lack-luster grayish-white tiles of the floor, realization started to ponder upon me. Where was I? This wasn't my room, my home even. The place didn't seem like a hospital and it was unlikely that someone even admitted me to a hospital. How did I reach here? Where was I?
The room was supposedly painted white but the paint was peeling away and there were signs of ageing throughout the room. There was a brown desk, one of those default office models, plain and simple with soft edges. There was a window at the far edge of the room. The curtains that covered the view were a soft peachy color. I walked towards the window and shoved the curtains to the sides to see grills, each about fifteen centimeters apart, providing just about enough width for a hand to reach the latch. The window seemed fairly clean and outside were plain lands and a deserted road leading to God knows where.
I noticed from the window that this building was continuing sideways, it was pretty large and somewhat jagged in its build. Also the building reeked of ancient vibes. It gave a sort of medieval aura from the time of kings and empires. Though I didn't know much about the architecture or the features of this building, my gut told me that this building was old, probably renovated but old.
The bigger question still remained unanswered. Where was I? And why was I not panicking? I didn't know where I was or how I would survive here yet my body and mind seemed to remain unfazed. There was just a general lack of panic or anxiety, something which would have been appropriate for a situation like this. Was it shock? Was I numb in fear that my body can longer instill any reaction? Was it an adrenaline rush? I wasn't sure what was going on but I didn't try to dwell on it too much.
There were two doors in the room, one must be the route leading out of the room and one hopefully the bathroom. I went at the door that was situated at the corner, the one that seemed more viable as an entrance and reached the handle. Locked. I tried to open the door again but no luck. The door was a solid brown, strong wooden door and the lock, though I was unaware of what kind of lock it was, didn't seem jammed or tight, it was simply serving its purpose as a lock.
Throughout all this time since I woke up, I now had a sudden urge. I needed to pee. I made a walking-running attempt towards the other door, the one which was situated at the center of the wall opposite to the bed and attempted to open the door and to my luck, the door opened. Inside was a spacious washroom which had closets and a rack of towels, even a bookshelf, all alongside a furnished toilet. I ran into the toilet and unleashed my urge as I exclaimed in relief.
After taking my time to check all the aspects of the washroom, I now knew that the closets had various clothes, all slightly similar to my taste and somehow of perfect fit to me. I also went through the bookshelf, all the books were fiction and of my taste. Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Fault in our Stars, The Da Vinci Code, alongside few of my childhood friends such as Percy Jackson & the Olympians series, Harry Potter series and many more, all books which I had read and enjoyed.
There was a body length mirror in the washroom where I examined how I looked. My hair looked way shorter than I remember, my eyes had dark bags below them, there were quite a few bruises on my face and neck. A scraggly beard had made its way over my face, wasn't a great addition to be honest. I pulled out my shirt to see various burn marks and scars all over my chest and abdomen. Also, I was looking heftier, there was a smooth oval of fat covering my abdomen and love handles that adorned the sides. In all, I looked older, signs of ageing had pushed my early twenties face to the verge of thirties. While my lack of fitness was an issue, it wasn't an issue that deviated from memory, it was the one constant.
