It was quite challenging when I was trying to explain everything to Cindy. I knew she wanted me to focus more on the wedding, but I had to go see my son. "Fine, you can go", she said. "As long as. You promise me that none of this effects the wedding."
"I promise. I know the wedding is more important right now, and I won't let him ruin it."
"Okay. But you also have to stop by the karate center on the way home. Marcus wants you to help him out with the decorations." Cindy gave me my keys back and I started to drive to Arelis' house. When I got there, I was a little startled to see Isaiah waiting on the steps. I parked my car and approached him.
"Excuse my french, but why the fuck is you sitting here freezing your ass off?", I asked. I mean, the boy was sitting down in a below zero climate with a t-shirt and some jeans.
"I thought you weren't gonna come."
"Of course I would come. I don't just forget about things so easily. Now if you don't mind, I'm kinda in a busy schedule." We both got in the car and left. I was pretty nervous to to Marcus, mainly because I thought he would forget about the fact that Arelis was pregnant. "Waddup Dr. M"
"Hey Devon. Who do you got with you today?"
"This is my son. The son I had with Arelis." His face became solemn once I said her name. He gave Isaiah a fake smile and showed us where the decorations were.
"I just need the both of you to help me paint the walls", he said. He seemed to be ignoring Isaiah's upset expression the whole time.he put the paint on the floor and handed both of us a paintbrush. As I began painting, I couldn't help but feel sorry for Isaiah.
"He doesn't like me", he said.
"He does, he just doesn't like your mother." I opened the can of paint for Isaiah and we both splashed the colors on the wall. To make things a little more fun, I purposely splashed some paint on him and the painting war began. It didn't last too soon because Marcus came with the most upset look I've ever seen him with. But as he began talking to me, I realized it had nothing to do with the fact that his walls looked like a piece of shit.
"I didn't want to tell you this because I didn't want you to be distracted from your wedding, but since your taking care of your son I wanted to inform you that you have to protect yourselves. Dad went to jail shortly after you and Cindy moved out of the lakehouse. He was arrested for Frank's death. I'm assuming he took the blame because he didn't want you to go to jail, but then again we both know that he's full of surprises. He just came out of jail 2 hours ago and I need you to be more alert. Especially after your family." Thinking of the word 'family' reminded me of Cindy. I couldn't let anyone else get hurt physically or emotionally. The problem was what I ws going to do now. If I took Isaiah home, he would be in more danger with only Arelis taking care of him. If I took him back to my place, Cindy would think I care more about him then I care about her. I couldn't let him ruin my wedding, but I couldn't let him stay with his mother. I wanted to immediatly let him stay with mom, but her life was in danger as well. His only outlet of safety was with me. Hopefully Cindy wouldn't mind, so I took him home.
"What took you so long?", she asked.
"Long story short, my father is out of jail and wants to kill me and anyone else I love."
"That doesn't explain why your 'son' is here."
"Well, dad's probably going to kill him too, so the best way to keep him safe is with us. He won't be a distraction at all. In fact, we should let him be the ring bearer."
"Yeah ok", she said sarcastically. "And Arelis is supposed to be okay with this?"
"I'll talk to her and see what I can do, but can he just stay here tonight? You see, the problem I think you're hiding is that you feel like the closer I get to him the closer I am with Arelis. I don't like her, I just have to manage her child. Mind you that he was just a mistake." The whole time I was saying this, I thought Isaiah would still be waiting in the car. But as it turned out, he heard every single word that came out my mouth.
"I thought you took me in because you wanted to spend some time with your son", he said. "But now I'm just a mistake and a distraction from you and your slut's perfect fairytale wedding. My life isn't a fairytale, so maybe I just don't belong here." He ran out the door as fast as he could and I had to chase after him. I got into my car and started fcllowing him until he ran into a ditch. I quickly parked my car and started running. By the time I caught up to him, he was sitting on a cliff. It was near the same spot where dad first tried to kill Marcus. "In the movies, they make this seem so dangerous, but its not so bad."
"Please don't do this Isaiah. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I just have a lot of things going on and I didn't realize that I was only thinking about myself. I'm sorry." He stood up and punched me in the stomach.
"You only do whatever it takes for you to get what you want, even if it doesn't have to mean a thing. I know you was going to say something like that. Just apologize, forget everything, and go backto being a jerk. All this time all you ever did was defend yourself and make Arelis look like the bad guy. But the thing you don't even realize is that your the bad guy. You just abandoned her expecting her to be a perfect single parent. I'm glad she's the one who raised me. I can't live one second with a guy like you." He left. I didn't even bother running after him, even if it was the last time I was ever going to see him.
