"It's time," Gloom called later, opening the door. "Let's get you something to eat."
They three of them filed out and followed the Umbreon.
Twitch noticed that many of the pokemon they passed shuffled out of Gloom's way as quickly as they could. Others growled and hissed or muttered under their breath. Gloom ignored them and strode on, her head high and her rings glowing.
They were taken to an enormous room littered with tipped over tables and chairs. It was filled with pokemon, all of them clustered around a pile of food in the centre. A few hurriedly fell back as Gloom approached, others didn't even notice the sudden change in the atmosphere.
Gloom halted a short distance away and leapt onto an unturned table, her rings lighting her body with a creepy yellow glow.
"Who gave you permission to eat?" she demanded, her voice sounding slightly angry compared to the way she usually spoke. " I don't see a single Keeper in here other than me."
" I decided it was time," announced a skinny Dragonite. "And the Keeper over there didn't object."
He waved a hand at an Absol with a silver ring on her horn slumped against the wall nearby. She was asleep and partially hidden under a chair.
"And who put Amaya, who's been on watch since the start of last night, in charge of food rationing? She was supposed to be resting in the Keeper's Room."
"Hateful of course," the Dragonair answered with a smirk. "He said he wanted to do something else while the sun was still out."
"Well then," Gloom said, the anger fading from her voice and returning to her normal, authoritative form of speaking. "As I am the Second Keeper of The House of Dying I order you all to back off while the Orphans choose their meal. Anyone who objects can speak with the High One."
The rest of the pokemon immediately retreated, some of them grumbling to each other, as Gloom led them forward.
The three of them each chose a fruit and stepped back. Gloom took two for herself and led them away, casting her gaze over the assembled crowd.
"And the rest of you can wait until the other Keepers have taken there's before you all begin to gorge yourselves on the food we collected for the community."
