The High One's sandy golden fur gleamed in the light of the lamps and his red eyes glowed. A rope of pearls criss-crossed his neck above the gold pendant on a cord. A plain silver band circled one paw and he had silver studs in his left ear. A large burn scar covered the left side of his face, leaving a black-red patch in the sandy gold.

The High One has lived for 500 years and as a Ninetales he is expected to have another 500 years here.

Shiver felt awed by his presence.

"Today," he spoke, addressing the crowd ,"we welcome the Orphans as a full part of our community. They will take the place alongside us as Young Keepers."

He nodded at them and Evergreen the Lilligant walked up to them, carrying a decorative pillow covered in jewelry.

"Evergreen shall choose your Keeper's mark for you and from now until the end of your life you shall wear it as a symbol of your connection to The House of Dying."

Evergreen's studied them with her amber eyes and reached up to grab a piece off of the pillow.

It was a small polished black orb on a thick silver chain that she placed around Shiver's neck. He puffed out his chest in pride.

She chose a blue and silver earring shaped like a snowflake and stabbed it through Glazed's ear. She whimpered slightly but didn't pull away.

"Don't worry it only hurts for a little bit," Evergreen whispered, pointing to on leaf on her head.

A flower earring made from polished lavender stones had been pierced through it.

Finally it was Twitch's turn. She was given a gold string with a sun pendant made from amber to be worn around her neck.

"As of now you three are Young Keepers," the High One announced. "For the next eleven days you will spend one day each with a different Keeper so that they can teach you valuable skills for your time later on in the community. When those eleven days are up, you will become Full Keeper's. The House of Dying welcomes you."

"We welcome you," the community chanted.

Shiver looked over a Gloom. He couldn't believe what he saw.

A glint of pride in her eyes, and the smallest hint of a smile.
