Chapter 1

A young girl in tattered clothes sat in a dark alley taking slow bites out of an old-looking apple. She hadn't eaten in days, but unlike the other homeless children, she took her time eating whatever food she was able to get. She has been on the streets for more than a year now so she knows how things work on the streets of Vale.

Her normal day consisted of digging through trash cans for food or begging on the side of the streets for whatever she could get. Some days were good, with her finding somewhat fresh food and gaining a small amount of money from generous people. While other days ended up with her going hunger or worse other homeless attacking her for what little she had. But she was a fighter, a survivor. No matter what the day brought she was always able to overcome it, this trait would lead to her life being turned completely upside down.

After finishing her apple the girl stood up and decided to go to her most profitable begging spot, right outside a small coffee shop that accidentally throws out food for her. She's grateful for the shop owners and in return for them giving her food she makes sure the rougher homeless kids steer clear of the place.

As she grew closer to the store she could tell something felt off today, there were a lot more people out on the streets, both human and faunus. The last few days faunus protesters had been going out onto the streets of Vale more and more often in protest to an increase of unexplained faunus' deaths. Though the girl herself was a faunus she did not care much for the politics surrounding human and faunus relations. She was to busy trying to find enough food to feed herself.

Pushing through the large crowds of faunus who were now in the streets holding signs and shouting the girl saw the shop just across an intersection. However a police roadblock stood between her and the shop. The cops seemed to all be on edge, all of them in full riot gear and clutching batons with some holding atlas made rifles. Something big was definitely going on and this is definitely not the place a homeless faunus wanted to be.

So the girl quickly began to head back the way she came before the sound of sirens began echoing throughout the street, more police were showing up and by how loud the sirens were meant that a lot more were on their way. Just as the girl was about to get out of the crowd a loud crash was heard before fire erupted over were the police blockade was. The crowd around her roared loudly and began rushing towards the blockade, a moment later loud bangs echoed throughout the street.

In a matter of moment the protest turned into an all-out riot. Faunus and faunus-supporting humans were running all over the streets, yelling and smashing windows to buildings and cars. Firebombs were thrown at police who fired back at the suspected throwers, the whole street was complete chaos. And right in the middle of it, a small homeless faunus girl.

While most kids her age would have frozen and panicked, she quickly ducked low and began running in a zig-zag like pattern to lessen the likely hood of a rouge shot hitting her. As she continued running more and more faunus seemed to be running in the opposite direction of her, some looked normal while others had weird masks on and a few even had concealed firearms.

The girl kept running until she came to the edge of town, the echos of distant gunshots could still be heard but very faintly. She breathed out heavily sweat dripping down her face, she had ran that whole entire time and not once did she stop, afraid of either being shot or roped into the riot. The dark side of her brain flashed a thought of how much stuff she could've gotten if she had stayed but she quickly shook that thought of her head, "no, I only take what I need," she mumbled to herself before slowly walking towards the small forested park that was outlining the edge of town.

As she entered the park four slightly taller figures slowly followed right behind her. As the young girl continued to walk through the park, smiling softly at trees that surrounded her, a voice spoke up from right behind her, "what is a filthy faunus doing in my park?"

The girl turned around to see a somewhat heavily built young boy with burnt-orange colored hair and indigo eyes standing behind her with three other boys, all human, with him. "I-I was just leaving," the girl said and quickly turned to leave. But right before she could get away a heavy hand landed on her shoulder and threw her to the ground.

"Listen here you filth, your kind is attacking our city and those who protect it! So I'm going to teach you a listen," the boy said before motioning with his head to his goons, who quickly grabbed the girl by the shoulder and held her in place. "This is for all those your kind have hurt," the boy growled before punching her straight in the chest, causing her to gasp out in pain. Before she could recover he punched her again, and again, and again. He kept going till blond covered his knuckles, "now you'll know your place, filth," the body said whipping off his knuckles in the grass.

The boys holding her tossed the barely breathing, bruised, and bleeding girl onto the ground before leaving her to her fate. The girl's vision blurred as she watched the four boys run off laughing loudly at what they had just done. She turned over slightly and looked up at the darkening sky. Just before he vision went black she saw what looked like an angle fly down towards her, a small smile spread across her face at the sight before darkness took her over.
