Yadirah
Why isn't my mom saying anything about Saifullah's proposal? Suwaydah sat down next to me on the dining table, preparing to color.
"Is that your homework?" I asked Suwaydah.
"Nope." She said, grinning.
"I'm going to tell Ummi, ya know?" I said.
"You wouldn't dare."
"No of course not... Mom!" I screamed. Suwaydah pouted and took out her homework from the bag beside her. Our mom came rushing into the kitchen.
"What's wrong?" She asked.
"She wasn't doing her homework. But now she is, so it's okay."
"No it's not. Suwaydah, what did I say about your homework? You have to do it right after school, and then you can do whatever you want the whole day, okay?" My mom said to her.
"But, how come Binyamin and Yadirah get to do it at night?" She asked, still pouting.
"Because they're older, and more stupider. They can do it whenever. You have to be the smarter one, okay?" My mom said kindly. "I'll give you one of my puddings if you listen, okay?" My mom thought pudding was the solution to everything...
"No, it's okay... How about some chocolate?" Suwaydah asked with sparkling eyes.
"Watch you weight." My mom said sternly after turning away from the table and walking into the kitchen. I laughed.
"You rejected her pudding. That's a no-no." I said.
"Oh, Yadirah come in the kitchen I have to tell you something." My mom said from the kitchen.
"Coming." I said, putting down my pencil. Here goes nothing. "Yes, mother?" I asked.
"Will you tell us who the guy is already?" She asked quietly.
"The guy?" I asked, forgetting what she was referring to. Right! I'm supposed to be in love with someone!
"Yeah... well about that."
"You were lying?" My mom asked me calmly. I stared back right at her with my mouth half open.
"Um, no. Well the guy turned out to be two-faced and he's already dating someone. So he's not as good as I thought he was." I said, quickly. Why are you spouting lies, Yadiah? It sort of sounds like I'm talking about someone I know. Oh no, was I referring to Nouman? That can't be, I've known from the start there was something wrong with him.
"What?" She asked. "And you didn't tell us?" She looked up at me, disappointed.
"Well, that's the thing. I found out just today." If you tell one lie, obviously you're going to be telling ten thousand others to back that one lie up.
"Oh... it's a good thing you found out earlier. It's not like I was going to get you married off to the guy without isthikhara." I laughed nervously. Well, this is awkward.
"Yadirah, a proposal came for you today."
"I know." I said. At that instant I realized I wasn't supposed to say that. Shoot. My mom stared at me.
"You know?" She asked.
"What? Oh, sorry, I wasn't paying attention. What were you saying?" I should talk to Binyamin about this lying problem. It's getting out of hand.
