"Funny how one night, can ruin your whole life..."
That's the first thing I think of when the news hits me. The line where Jenna's pregnancy test comes out positive in Waitress. Yes, I am a musical nerd, but now isn't the time for that.
"Alyssa? Alyssa!!" Carly was shaking my shoulders, I must have zoned out because her voice sounded miles away.
"I think I'm gonna be sick-" is all I get out before running to the corner of the room and vomiting in the trash can. I didn't even realize the nurse was still her until she speaks up.
"Oh dear. Carly, would be a doll and get us some water? Don't worry I'll stay and take care of Alyssa. No don't go all the way down to the cafeteria, go to the nurse's station. Tell them I sent you."
After throwing up what felt like every organ in my body, I collapse on the floor in front of the trash. The cold tile feels good against my cheek, until the nurse lifts my head and places it in her lap. She starts patting a cool towel against my forehead and neck.
"Thank you...You know I've seen you so much the past few days, but I still don't know your name..."
"Oh sweetie, that's alright. My name is Nancy, I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot of each other for a while." She pushes some hair off my face and sits me up as Carly walks back in. They both help me stand up and guide me back to the chair I was in before. I take a seat and sip some of the water Carly brought back. Nancy moves to the sink and rinses it before disposing of it in a laundry hamper in the corner of the room.
"Okay you two, I want to talk to you about something."
"Yes ma'am?"
"Please, I told you to call me Nancy. Anyways, there's this new program for pregnancies where the woman can request a personal nurse. Every appointment and meeting, every class or any questions you have, I can be by your side, there as your mentor and personal nurse. If you would like of course. You two girls have left an impact on an old soul like me. I like you two, I'd like to be there for you and your baby.." she looks at me.
"..and you and your fiancé." she looks at Carly.
"Oh really?! Oh Nancy that'd be amazing! Thank you!" I stand up and hug Nancy before swaying a bit and sitting myself down.
"Take it easy there. And of course there is some paperwork, but Carly, Andrew just woke up a little while before you came in. I think you two should go see him and I'll bring the paperwork for Alyssa to fill out to his room. I'll have a couple forms for you and Andrew as well."
"Of course, thank you Nancy."
"No problem girls, now go see Andrew." she gives us a kind motherly smile before walking out of the room, leaving Carly and I facing each other and a new chapter of our lives. For the both us. But just like always, we'll be in it together.
