"But when we find each other on opposite sides of the net, I won't hesitate to take you down""I won't have it any other way"
Oikawa was having a bad day; he was pretty sure he's been dragged across the abyss of darkness. He thought he'd never see the light again.
But what was it that made his day seem so bad? Well, his serves have been way off these past few days. That morning, he hasn't gotten a serve in the court. It was either too far out or barely over the net. And for him, that was his weapon. Having it utterly useless, especially since they were having a practice match with a whole new team was pissing him off.
"Oikawa-san, calm down," his teammate Miko had repeated for the nth time. Just after saying that, the ball dug into the court right beside him. "Oikawa, the school is arriving in a few, get yourself together—"
But the auburn haired boy couldn't care less about the practice match. What mattered to him right now was perfecting his serves. Despite the crystalline beads of sweat that trickled down his forehead and the palpitating rhythm of his heart, he threw the ball in the air, and powered it over the net. This time, he was a little more careless. The next thing he knew, a teammate had collapsed from the impact.
"Oikawa!" His coach yelled, eyeing the freshman frustratingly. He gestured him to come closer. He stumbled on his feet to get to him. His coach shoved a water bottle to his chest. "You are not fit to play for the practice match. Go change and sit by the benches."
"No," Oikawa mumbled, shaking his head, still panting. His usual bright eyes dimmed darkly. "I can play, coach, just give me more time to—"
"You are overworking yourself!" His coach barked. The other passerbys looked at them curiously. His fellow teammates though, did not seem too surprised. "I will not have one of our own injure himself in this match. You're too worked up."
Oikawa slammed the water bottle on the bench. One of the managers offered a towel, which he snatched swiftly and stormed out of the room.
As he walked out of the gym, he caught up with the bus of the team they were playing against. He wasn't allowed to play against them, but he wanted to see what kind of team they were like. He decided to watch them from afar, leaning against the wall as the players streamed out with blue and black duffels.
"That star setter is here? What?" One of the students whipped his head towards his teammates who paved behind him. "Oiwaka Oigawa ?"
"I think it's Oiwaga. That's the guy who won best setter in Junior high and in high school."
"That's Oikawa. Oikawa Tooru. He was my teammate back in high school...," a familiar voice retorted. When he straightened up to get a better look, he almost doubled over in surprise.
He's been so worked up with volleyball and academics and his part time job by the nearby fast food that Iwaizumi's distant message of playing a practice match against them weeks ago completely slipped his mind. And perhaps he had a reasonable excuse for that.
But now, lo and behold, he was there. He was walking the halls of his university just minutes before their practice match.
"Iwa-chan," he mouthed, but to only his ears. He watched them fade into the gym, hearing them stop to greet his team and enter.
He wanted to approach the raven haired boy. Heck, he wanted to do more than that. He wanted to run towards him like he was chasing the stars. He wanted to follow him inside the court and play with him again, just like old times. Just like their distant years in Seijoh.
Ah, Seijoh. What a grand time. He wished he could talk to Iwaizumi again and reminisce in their fond memories.
But that proved difficult to do. Just a step nearer the gym was difficult to do. It had been three years. Three years of muggy summers and frigid winters. Three years of fallen cherry blossom petals and torn apart leaves. Three long and distant years of a broken communication wire that they never bothered to get fixed.
