AKAASHI BELIEVES IN YOU
—
The day before their graduation, Oikawa found himself standing by the steps of their high school volleyball gym for what would be the last time.
He was by himself, huddled in a thick jacket and a beanie, staring at a cherry blossom tree which was nearing its full bloom. The night was young, the gym closed and empty, the stars a dome of three years worth of memories.
It was in this exact spot that he and Iwaizumi promised each other on their first year of high school that they would get to nationals together.
Oikawa let out a humorless chuckle, knowing full well how devastating it was to return to this place after their defeat to Karasuno.
But it wasn't just the memory of volleyball that was engrained here. It was also three years worth of ranting about alien conspiracy theories and bug trivias. It was three years worth of after school milk bread accompanied by their favorite tea from the vending machines and rounds and rounds of endless chaos with Iwaizumi, Mattsun and Hanamaki. It was coming to the volleyball gym with Iwaizumi as his vice-captain and having the passion to conquer the court.
This gym didn't mark the end of their friendship, but it marked the end of six years worth of the best setter-ace duo Oikawa could ever ask for.
Oikawa smiled softly to himself. There was a certain ache in his chest that didn't want to face the fact that they were going to different universities. They had been by each other's sides for so long that breaking the string was like breaking off pieces of him too.
Aside from the solid long standing friendship they had built over the years, Oikawa knew there was a space in his heart that yearned for Iwaizumi. That yearned for his company, his charisma, his grumpy ass, his naturally tanned skin, his sweet muscles, his hard earned smile.
Tomorrow, he would confess his love to Iwaizumi.
—
Unfortunately, cupid found out about his plans and decided to mess with him a little more than liked.
It was as if he was sneering in his face, tongue out, taunting him, saying "Happy graduation! But no love for you from Iwa-chan! Enjoy a sucky, miserable life!"
He was hit by the worst case of Murphy's Law at the worst possible moment.
First of all, with the whirlwind of last minute graduation reminders and classroom farewells, there was no chance for him to talk to Iwaizumi at all all morning. He tried to sneak into his classroom early in the morning, but of course Iwaizumi had to arrive late on the last day of high school. He had sat by his table for as long as he could before the bell rang. He sat and fiddled with the papers under the desk (because of course Iwaizumi left papers under his table). Then just when he was walking out, Iwaizumi walked in the classroom. Oikawa let out a cry of frustration. Ugh, this boy.
"Iwa-chaaan! I was waiting for you!" Oikawa whined, crossing his arms. "What took you so long anyway?
Iwaizumi merely looked at him, void of much emotion. "I ran out of water this morning." He said simply.
