What is Magic
___________________

Magic as a term is problematic. It did not arise as a straightforward attempt; it does not represent an exclusive set of ideas. Instead, an arrangement of ideas that made the concept of magic as we have come to define it.

Magic is a word related to the latin term magia; "to have power, to be able."

Magic has often been dismissed as either primitive or irrational and is often alien to modern society. It is somewhere inbetween religion and science, It has also been repeatedly presented as the archetypally non-modern phenomenon. The idea that "magic" should be rejected developed in anthropology, before moving into classical and Biblical studies.

Putting terms and history aside, its important understand what magic is. Magic, in short is when one uses the energy within the space around them and manipulate it to one's desire or intent. It's an unseen force that's all around us, waiting to be tapped into.

Magic Theory, sometimes called Hermetic theory, refers to the set of universal magical principles. It is a single, universal theory that assimilates the magical concepts and practices from many traditions.

Magic theory incorporates various forms of occult knowledge including astrology, alchemy, and the magical properties of gemstones. The laws of magic are part of magic theory and the rules occasionally refer to them.

There are many theories on magic, both for the believers and non-believers. Let's explore some of the theories behind magic, where did it come from? How could you explain It? Is it a real thing?

Psychological theories of magic treat magic as a personal phenomenon intended to meet individual needs, as opposed to a social phenomenon serving a collective purpose.

Psychosis
According to this theory, "primitive man" is not a rational being, and in fact jumps straight to a magical disbelife.

Bad science
"bad science" model claims that primitive man is rational, and magical beliefs come into existence as he tries to explain puzzling phenomena without enough information.

Symbolic action (placebo effect)
The symbolic action theory understands magic as a course of action taken when there exists an emotional (psychological) need for action, but no practical option exists.

The other concept used to describe a mode of rationality or way of thinking is that one looks to invisible forces to influence events, effect change in material conditions, or present the illusion of change.

Anthropologists, identify three main types of instrumental magic: the practices, the purpose, and the destructive. using magic is complex and not entirely predictable.

Practices classified as magic include divination, astrology, incantations, alchemy, sorcery, spirit mediation, and necromancy.

The purpose of magic is to acquire knowledge, power, love, or wealth; to heal or ward off illness or danger; to cause harm to an enemy; to reveal information; to induce spiritual transformation; to trick; or to entertain.
