Sara tapped her socked feet against the wall of her Chicago apartment. Usually, at 1 in the afternoon, she would be busy waiting tables at her job at a local diner to help pay for college. Her father never liked cities, as he was raised in a small town outside of Dallas, Texas. He told her that if she came up here for college, he wouldn't give her a dime. Her mother could do nothing to change his stance on the subject either. He wanted his little girl to stay and take over the family business. Sara, however, wanted to pursue a career in art.
Sara texted her best friend, Amara, with the hope of temporarily ending the boredom of not being able to go anywhere. She understood why she couldn't go anywhere, this was the only way to stop the virus. Didn't mean she wasn't bored though. Getting off the couch, Sara heads out to the little balcony overlooking the Chicago streets. She ran her hands through her thick, curly hair as a slight breeze blew. She frowned as she took in the distinct lack of cars on the road or people on the streets. God, the world had really turned upside down. Usually, Sara could hear the beeps of horns blowing or the noise of people walking and talking on the streets. Now, all she heard was silence and 8A's God awful choice in music.
The balcony door on apartment 8C opened up and a young man around Sara's age stepped out. He was clearly of Hispanic descent and was dressed in a Chicago Cubs hoodie, sweatpants, and flip-flops. Not that Sara herself was much better. She wore some leggings, an oversized sweatshirt, and a beanie on her head. The man noticed her and waved. She waved in return as a smile broke out on her face.
"Hello!" She said, happy to see another human being. It was only April 15th, but she was missing seeing others.
"Hey, how are you?" The man politely asked.
"I'm missing human contact, and you?" The man laughed.
"Same! I'm Josh."
"I'm Sara."
"Well, Sara, where ya from?"
Conversations with Josh became the highlight of her day. She eventually got his number, but nothing beat their conversations from their balconies. Sara learned that Josh was a chef at his Dad's restaurant. It had been in his family since 1931, a few years after Josh's grandfather and grandmother immigrated to America from Spain. They started the restaurant to get by, but it prospered and was set to have its best year on record until the virus hit.
Sara found out Josh was a diehard Cubs fan and played baseball all through high school. She personally sucked at the sport and didn't understand it. She was not a jock in the least bit, preferring to sit on the bleachers and draw.
Sara stepped out onto the balcony where she saw Josh was out there. He looked nervous.
"Hey, Josh!"
"Hey, Sara. Umm, I have to tell you something." Sara got nervous.
"What is it?"
"You know the day we first started talking?"
"Yeah?"
"I thought you were really cute and that you had a boyfriend. Then when you offhandedly mentioned you were single, my heart soared. If you would be alright with that...may when this is all over, I can take you out on a date?"
"You know Josh, I would love that. Conversations with you honestly have become the best part of my day."
"Really?" He asked.
"Yes, you make it actually a good bit better. Instead of just being alone, I get to be alone together with you."
