This takes place right after The Last Olympian and before The Lost Hero. This is before Percy loses his memory.
"Which one of them do you think it is?" Grover askes, and Chiron shakes his head.
"Not one, I suspect. Maybe all." Grover looks at him startled. They both know what neither of them has said. If all of these kids are half-bloods, that means there is definitely more than one monster here. That would also be the most kids a satyr has ever taken at once. It would be hard.
"Chiron," he looks at the centaur like he'll tell Grover something better than what he knows is true. "how many monsters are there here sir?" The old centaur looks at him, and Grover can't help but think he is about to get an Athena-like response.
"As many monsters as half-bloods is usually the truth." Chiron tells him, and Grover sighs. Five half-bloods, five monsters. That every teacher here except for one, Chiron, or as the students knew him, Mr. Brunner, wasn't a monster.
They look out the office window and into the night. The stars shine brightly against the jet-black sky. Grover can't stop thinking about the last time he did this, escorted a newbie to camp. Percy Jackson. His best friend. Percy would tell him he could do it. That he would make it to camp. Grover wasn't so sure. The last time he tried this, he got someone killed. He was not ready for that to happen again.
"It shall be better than last time," Chiron says. "There is no huge prophecy this time. Relax." As if that will help.
"So what?" Grover asks helplessly, "There are five of them this time. Last time I checked, that's four more than last time." Chiron smiles. His smile almost relaxes Grover for a split second, but the feeling goes away as fast as it came.
"It will happen soon, Grover. You know it will." The satyr is silent. Of course he is. Who would be ready for this? No one. "Go to bed now, young satyr. Get your rest." Chiron tells him with a smile. "Yeah, okay." Grovers says as he exits the room.
As he walks toward his room, he tries to ask himself how he can do better this time, and he keeps coming to the same conclusion. It can't go better than last time, there are way more this time. He turns right, down the hallway to his dorm room, stops halfway to his. Now he stands in front of where Percy stayed when he was here at Yancy Academy.
"Gods, I miss Percy." Grover whispered to himself, and suddenly Grover knew what to do. He turns back the way he came, past Mr. Bruner's office, and to the doors of the school. He pushes them open and walks down the streets of Manhattan.
It had been a long time since Grover had visited Percy, but now that he went to a regular school, Percy stayed at home with his mom during the school year. Grover notices where he is and stops without even really thinking about where he was headed, he had ended up on the Jackson's front step to their apartment. Grover rings the bell, and a groggy Sally Jackson replies with "Who is it?" Grover smiles at the familiar, friendly voice.
"Hi, um it's Grover. I was wondering if I could speak with Percy?"
Mrs. Jackson opens the door. "Oh hello, Grover. Come on in." She gestures him inside, and he sits on the couch.
Sally goes and gently knocks on a door down the hall. "Percy, wake up dear." Grover manages to hear someone groan. "Come on, Percy. Grovers here." At that, Percy strides out of his room and comes to see Grover.
"What's up?" Percy asks, "Is something wrong at camp?"
Grover sighs. "No, I just needed advice."
Percy smiles. "So you came to me? Not really the best plan."
Grover chuckles. "It's about some half-bloods I have to take to camp. There are five of them. And-" he looks at Percy's mom sadly. "And I don't want it to go like the last time I was at Yancy." Percy and his mom exchange glances. "Tell me how I can do better." the satyr pleads.
"The minotaur wasn't your fault. You can't blame yourself for that." He hugs his friend. "And besides," Percy adds, "it worked out in the end anyway."
"You'll do great." Sally says, but Grover is not so sure.
"You better go get some rest, buddy." Percy tells him. The last thing Grover wanted right now was to go back to Yancy Academy but Percy and Sally had both agreed that he should. "Let me know when you get them to camp, I want to meet the newbies."
Grover smiles. "Okay, I guess see you at camp. " Grover opens the door, then turns back. "Oh, and Sally, thank you for letting me in."
Now Mrs. Jackson smiles. "Anytime." And with that Grover continues out the door and back to his dorm.
When he arrives back at his room, he lays down on his bed. His mind is swimming with his conversations from earlier. It will happen soon, Chiron had said, and he hates it. He isn't prepared to take five half-bloods to camp. The minotaur wasn't your fault. Percy told him. But it was. Grover thought. She had died because of me. Then Grover hears what Mrs. Jackson said swim through his mind. You'll do great. Somehow, hearing that from her were the words Grover had to hear, to put his mind at rest, so he can fall asleep.
