Alysia's POV:
I wake up in my dorm, and I can already tell today is gonna be awful. My head hurts and I am exhausted. When I get out of bed, I change into one of my many black shirts and throw a red flannel on overtop. I put on a random pair of jeans, brush my hair, and grab my books, as I head out the door, and towards my first class of the day: Pre-Algebra.
Now, don't get me wrong, I hate all of my classes here, but Pre-Algebra is by far the worst. Well, I guess not all of my classes. Latin is okay, but only because Mr. Brunner is not a bad teacher. He is fun, which is the only reason I kind of like it. But back to Pre-Algebra. Last year, after my dad and I moved to New York, I was introduced to Mrs. Kerr, the math teacher at the time, and she wasn't half bad. Little did I know though, Mrs. Kerr was retiring, so in came our newest teacher: Mrs. Stauss. She is the absolute WORST person ever. She scares us all into completing our assignments, gives detentions if you don't get them done, and just yells at everyone all the time.
On my way to class, I spot my only friend here at Yancy. Grover Underwood. He is the only person who really seems to get me. Grover is standing around talking to another kid I don't know very well. I think his name might be Todd, or Terry, I don't really know. Grover sees me and smiles. He tells the other boy that they'll talk later and comes over by me.
"Hey Alysia," he says, "how's it going?"
I glare at him. "How is it ever going at Yancy?" I counter, and we both laugh.
He kinda looks nervous, but I don't say anything about it. He must notice that I am analyzing him because he says, "Sorry I didn't see you right away. There was something I just had to tell Tyler." Tyler. So that's his name.
"Oh, that's cool," I tell him. Honestly, I didn't know Grover talked to anyone other than me here, so much for knowing my only friend. He fidgets with his hands, and now I know I have to ask. "Why are you so nervous today?" I ask. "Are you alright?"
Grover freezes, eyes wide, realizing he has been caught. "Um... so uh what are you reading?" he asks me, trying to sneak away from the question.
"Don't change the subject on me. Why are you so nervous?" I press, and he doesn't answer. "Oh come on, Grover. You can tell me."
Grover swallows and shakes his head. "I can't, Alysia. I'm sorry." Suddenly, I'm furious. My only friend can't tell me what's bothering him? Really?
"Yeah, you can, Grover." I say, then add softly, "You just won't." Grover looks stunned, and then it turns to terror.
"A-A-Alysia," he stutters, but I don't want him to talk.
"Don't even start with me." I say coldly, but my feet stay planted, daring him to say something. He says my name again, but it comes out as a yelp instead. "Just stop, okay Grover? Just stop." I say, a little loudly. Not loud enough for other students to hear me though, that's just how quiet I am.
"Miiissss Darwin," I hear a cool voice hiss behind me, and a shiver goes down my back. Grover's eyes are huge now, and he whimpers. He nods at me to confirm who I know is there. I turn to see Mrs. Stauss glaring down at me with her dagger-like eyes. "did I hear you shout at Mr. Underwood?" she inquires, and I'm too stunned to answer.
After what seems like an eternity of staring into m soul, Grover speaks up. "She wasn't shouting at me, ma'am." he says, "We were just talking, that's all." Mrs. Stauss wheels on Grover.
"Did I ask you, Mr. Underwood?" she taunts, as Grover yelps. "That's what I thought," she says as she turns to me. "And as for you," she points at my chest, "failure to answer my questions will result in a detention." she pauses for emphasis, "I'll ask again. Did you shout at Mr. Underwood? Yes or no?"
