FIVE: c o o k s w i t h n o t a l e n t

Saturday night we got ready to head over to the Edwards' house. It was cold and snowy, so I settled for a pair of dark jeans and a red hoody. I left my wavy hair down and then headed downstairs to see if my parents were ready yet.

"Hi sweetheart, do you think you can help me with this?" My mom asked as she fiddled with a necklace helplessly. I went over and helped her put it on. She was a lot more dressed up than I was, in a black skirt that reached just below her knees and a simple off white blouse. Then again presentation had always been very important to her.

"Are we ready to go now?" My dad asked walking into the kitchen and giving mom a kiss on the cheek.

"Yup," I answered so we all put on jackets and boots and headed to the car. My parents hummed happily to themselves as we drove a few blocks over to their house.

"Welcome," Mrs. Edwards said greeting us at the door. She took our jackets and all of a sudden I heard footsteps run down the stairs and down to the front entrance where we were.

"Kristy!" The 13 year old cheered.

"Hey Kathryn," I said giving her a hug. She was basically bouncing in excitement. The twins had three younger siblings. The youngest was 8 year old Tanner, then 13 year old Kathryn, and then 15 year old Avery.

"How's school? Do you have a boyfriend? Is he cute?" She started to ask. The thing about Kathryn was that she always seemed to have a hundred things on her mind. That she just wanted to happen to share with you, but she could never decide what she wanted to tell you first. So then it just came out in a big jumbled mess.

"Calm down Kathryn, she's a guest; not a prisoner in need of interrogating," Avery said slowly making her way into the room. She was quite the opposite of her younger sister, to her there was never a reason to rush.

"Nice to see you Avery," I said with a smile.

        She nodded slightly. "You too."

"Kristy!" Finn said when he saw me quickly wrapping me in a hug. "It's nice to see you." I couldn't help but felt slightly creepy when I noticed how good he smelled. But honestly he smelt amazing, and I'm pretty sure if I could I would be like that guy from the gain commercial who balled up the sheet and just smelled it.

"It's nice to see you too," I said smiling at him.

"Well I'm sure it's even nicer to see me," Austin teased as he walked up to join the crowd of his siblings.

"Not likely," I replied. I caught my mom's eye as she headed to a different room with the adults. 'Be nice.' She mouthed to me when nobody was looking. I nodded reluctantly.

"But, it is good to have you back," I said. It was pretty obvious I was lying, and just trying to be polite. I mean I could tell from their faces that Kathryn knew that, Avery knew that, and even Finn knew that; but Austin seemed to ignore my lack of sincerity.

"It is good to be back," he said smiling.

"Finn can you give me a hand in the kitchen?" Mrs. Edwards asked.

"Coming mom," he called. "You coming?" He asked me. It was no secret that I was best friends with Finn, so when I followed him it was no big surprise. I couldn't help but feel a little odd when Austin came with us. The twins had always been inseparable, but with Austin having been gone for 4 years it was easy to forget that.
