Once upon a time, there was a kingdom. The kingdom was very strange, as it had no ruler, only three loyal guards.

The first guard was loved by all they met, they wore a warm smile that could melt through the coldest of souls. He was kind and fair to everyone, and played with the children every day. His duty was to protect the innocent, and he did so with pride.

The second guard was loved by most they met, even though he always had a stern look on his face. They were always found busy at work, it was a surprise he ever slept. His duty was to protect the important, and he did so with pride.

The third guard was loved by nobody they met, despite his caring look for others. They often spent time hiding from the kingdoms people, reading books to distract himself. His duty was to protect the land, and he did so with tears.

One day the three guards had a meeting, they sat in a circle along with a healer, a farmer, and a shopkeeper. They did not sit in chairs, but instead six green velvet pillows.

The first guard spoke "the towns people are happy and well fed" he smiled at the second guard.

The second guard spoke "all visiting royals were satisfied, nothing is amiss" he glanced at the farmer.

The farmer spoke "the crops are well and plentiful, we are lucky this year" she turned to the healer.

The healer spoke "the death toll has decreased dramatically, we are healthy" he turned to the shopkeeper.

The shopkeeper spoke "there has been a recent craze for paint, we should make more" she looked down.

The third guard did not speak, he never spoke during the meetings; If the third guard had anything important, the second guard would be the one to report.

The moon lit the sky to a warm blue, shining perfectly. The stars adorned the moon like lovely pearls that twinkled softly as to not overpower the goddess jewel in he sky.

The third guard gazed upon its beauty that night, his silent words of wonder caught up in the wind whispering among the flowers.

Quiet dripping of rain fell from the heavens, blessing the ground fertility. If fell to the guards top, showering him in its blissful kisses.

He looked wonderingly, lustfully at the sky. Oh how jealous he was of the sky, how peaceful the sky was, how admired the sky was.

The guard would give anything to live the life of the sky. But he knew it was a foolish thing to dream, as the only creatures given the chance were birds, not humans nor monsters.

The third guard heard the firm footsteps he knew so well. Not even a spared glance and he knew the second guard was there.

The second guard made their way next to the third guard, the crinkles of grass wavering beneath his footsteps. In one quick motion the third guard then sat beside him.

The second guard looked at his companion, both of their clothes thoroughly soaked from the top.

The second guard gazed back, his beautiful white and red eyes focused on him carefully, but the third guard understood his focus was on everything.

"You're going to catch a cold" he mumbled to the smaller.

"I don't care if I do" the third guard blinked, then turned back to look at the sky.

The second guard sighed, the third was always difficult. "Would you at least take my coat?".

"If you wanna" he replied. He knew the second guard would, and he wouldn't want to miss out on the warmth.

Not a moment later he heard the shuffling of the seconds coat coming off. Soon the immediate warmth from the soft, warm, thick material being wrapped around his shoulders gingerly.

He poked his arms through the holes, and cuddled up with the heated fibers. He was still damp from the rain but he was warm now.

He continued to stare up at the mighty sky, becoming mesmerized within seconds.

"You know.." the third guard whispered "if you see the moon when it rains it means that something bad will happen."

The second guard knew this, as he had been taught the signals of god since a child. "Indeed" his voice echoed softly with hollowness.

"What do you suppose it be?" The third asked with wonder "war? Famine? Sickness?"

The second mentally cringed at the thought of all of them "I do pray god will have mercy, that's all I can say."

"God does not give that easily." The third guard lingered with his words.

"He mustn't for we would become too greedy."

The third guard blinked at the statement "I don't believe that."

"How come?" The second pressed. He has rarely heard someone disagree with the writings.

"It just" the third paused "doesn't make sense to me. I never feel like I learn from god punishments.."

"Perhaps you just don't feel it" he mumbled "If I think really hard I can figure out what all my troubles teach."

"Maybe you can, but I can't."

"I suppose god may be too hash an you" the taller shifted closer in his way of comfort.

"You suppose?" The third sneered "I cant walk out in day without being stoned!"

Quickly a silence settled between the both. Any words that came to mind would only worsen the tainted conversation.

The third guard focused back on the sky in attempt to distract himself from the awkwardness. But even the moon could not help him now.

He then heard shifting from the second, and before he knew it two strong arms found themselves wrapped around his torso.

Despite not able to physically get the seconds body heat, the third felt warm at the contact. Being held like that felt nice to his tired soul.

Wasting no time to fall limp with joy, he completely forgot their previous troubles.

In all the guard hated hugs, despised it as a trap, but the second guard could make him take those feelings away in an instant.
