I walk the long way to school, my thoughts cloudy, and me, feeling empty. I kept looking around, because I was sure that dark creep was coming for me. I had a taser, some pepper spray, and mace in my backpack, hidden, just to be safe. I didn't stop looking around until I was at school. I went inside and headed to my first class, still subconciously looking around. He wouldn't come for me while all these students were here, would he?
I sat in the back of my first class, somewhat eager for it to start. I needed to get my mind off of you-know-what. The minutes rolled by, and I was starting to get bored. All the other students looked so into their work. Figures. I wrote down my notes and decided to look out the window. Anything out there must be more interesting than this. I looked and froze.
He was here.
He was sitting right out the window.
He smiled his ghoulish smile at me and winked. I got up and screamed. Screamed so loud, the whole school must have heard me. Everyone stood up and some of the girls got on their chairs, afraid there might be a mouse on the floor. My teacher rushed over to me. "Ree-Ha, what is the matter?", he said. "He's here!", I yelled. "Who's here?", he said. "The Shadow Man!", I said. "He's right-"
I looked. He had disappeared. "What?!", I yelled and opened the window. I looked left and right. He was gone. I turned to the teacher and students, who were slowly backing away from me. "I'm not crazy", I say, walking towards them. "There was a demon sitting right outside that window, and he's going to kill us all if we don't get out of here!" The teacher hid behind his clipboard. "Um Ree-Ha, perhaps you should go to the nurse for a while", he said quietly. I pulled my hair, I actually pulled my hair. "I DO NOT NEED THE NURSE!", I shouted. "I know you all think I'm crazy, but I swear, I'm not! There was a devil guy outside this window, and he eats rats and squirrels! While they're still alive! And he might eat human beings too! So I suggest you stop taking this so lightly, and get out of the school before he eats us all!"
The class and my teacher stared at me. "Teacher, she's scaring me", one of the girls said, clinging fearfully to the teacher. "Yeah, someone lock her up in an institution, she's lost her mind!", a boy said. I groaned. "I have not lost my mind!", I exclaimed. "I know what I saw!" The teacher leaned towards the class phone. "Do. Not. Touch. That. Phone", I growled menacingly. He darted away from the phone. "Somebody better call somebody!", another girl said. "I'm not going to die in the hands of some crazy bitch!" The rest of the class murmured in agreement.
That was it. I gave up. It was clear that no one would believe me, so there's no point in trying.
I grabbed my things. "Fine, you wanna stay and get eaten? Be my guest!"
And with that, I stormed towards the door, desperate to get away. "Young lady, where are you going? School isn't over", my teacher said. I opened the door. "Since none of you will believe me, I'm going to find proof of what I saw. You all might die in this shithole while I'm gone, but that's on you." And with that, I slammed the door behind me, and ran out of school.
When I left school, it had gotten unusually cloudy. Thunder rumbled across the sky, and the trees swayed. Wonderful. It's going to rain when I finally get the chance to get my proof. I got a flashlight, and my taser out, and I decided to go to the alley first, since that was where I had first seen him. I walked carefully holding my flashlight out. "Okay, spooky demon, come out, come out. I know you're here somewhere." Then in the distance, I heard chewing and crunching. It was him. He was eating yet another rodent. Yes! Now I just have to videotape him doing it, and everyone will finally believe me.
I raced over to where the chewing was coming from. Then I saw the dumpster, where I had first seen him, but he wasn't there. Weird. I went closer to the dumpster, and with each step, the chewing grew louder. I stepped on something and it broke. It was a rat bone. In fact, millions of rodent bones surrounded the dumpster. There was a loud clanging noise behind me. I flashed my light in the direction, but there was no one. I swallowed and went closer to the dumpster. I looked to it's left and right. No one. I looked inside. No one.
Then where is the chewing and crunching coming from?
Then I saw a figure laying down in the distance. Could that be him? He looked like he was sleeping. Perfect. I could get a picture of him, and he wouldn't even know it.
I walked quietly up to it, and when I looked closer, I dropped my flashlight, and almost threw up.
It was the body of a normal human man, and he was decapitated. Someone had ripped his head open, and took his brain out. The rest of his limbs had been sawed off, too. His torso was slit open, and it was clear that more of his internal organs were taken out.
I just stared at it, my heart racing so fast, it vibrated throughout my body.
I've got to get out of here.
The chewing started again, and I snatched my flashlight and ran like hell. Right now, I didn't care about proof, and I didn't care about finding my torturer. All I cared about was my life, and it was going to be over if I didn't get out.
The chewing and crunching grew louder and closer to me as I ran. I started calling out for someone, anyone to help. The wind howled and I tripped and fell on my face. I groaned in pain, and slowly got up and brushed myself off. The chewing had stopped. I looked behind me. No one there. I looked to my right and left. No one. I sighed in relief. Good. I turned around.
And there was the shadow man, in all his shadowy glory. I stared at him, my eyes wide.
He was chewing on a live possum. He smiled and raised his club.
"Good night, sweetie."
And he struck me hard across the head. Right before I blacked out, I could see darkness cover his red, glowing eyes.
