The Wedding

I sat in the library after Kathleen left me alone to think. She also left me with the poison. I felt bad, because she trusts me, and I was torn between marrying Taehyung and staying to rule the Underworld with him. On the other hand, I wanted my freedom as well as Kathleen, Dohyun, and my father. And I wanted to be with my mother again. I didn't know what to do. I paced back and forth in the library, trying to come up with a solution. I slipped the vial of poison in my pocket. Then I made my decision. I loved Taehyung, but I loved Kathleen and my father too. I knew what I had to do.

I remembered the tales of Persephone I had read. I went out to her garden. "Persephone!", I called out. Persephone's head popped out between some rose bushes. "Ree-Ha, what is it?", she asks. "I need your help", I say. "What do you need?", she asks, stepping out of the bushes. I whisper in her ear what I was doing, and what I needed her to do. She gasps. "This contains so much deception. I'm so in!"

"Even at Taehyung's expense?", I say. Persephone shrugs. "Hey, Taehyung's yours, not mine. Besides I live in the Underworld. I'm used to seeing death happen around here." I folded my arms and smiled. "You know, you're not as sweet as you are in your stories", I say. Persephone smiles mischievously. "Don't tell anyone", she whispers.

I go back to the bedroom me and Taehyung share. I have a huge knot in my stomach, and I kinda feel like I want to throw up. Soon Kathleen steps into my room. "You wanted to see me?", she says. "Yeah", I say, and reach into my pocket. Kathleen stares at my hand and pales.

"Ree-Ha.....where did you get those?"

In my hands were three of Persephone's pearls. Back in ancient times, when Hades forced her to marry him when he kidnapped her, Persephone wanted visitors because she felt lonely at times. So she created pearls and gave them to visitors so they could safely come into the Underworld, and safely come back out.

"Persephone gave them to me", I said. "I asked her for them, so you, my dad, and Dohyun can get out of the Underworld safely."

"Ree-Ha, you're coming too....."

I don't answer her. I just let the reality of the situation sink in. "Ree-Ha, you have to come!", Kathleen says, her voice rising. "You're not seriously going to marry him, are you?!"

"I love him!", I say, standing up. "I thought he was just a kidnapping bastard that didn't care about anyone but himself, but there's so much more to him than that! I've been around here long enough to figure that out! There's a sweet side to him too, a soft side....."

My voice trailed off. "I don't know, me and Taehyung just make sense. He understands me, and we have a lot more in common than I do with most human guys. Kathleen, we're both demons for crying out loud!"

"It shouldn't matter, I'm not leaving without you!", Kathleen shouts. "You're my best friend! My only friend! If I leave you...I'll be alone again...", her voice cracked, and I could see tears running down her cheeks. Tears were filling up my eyes too. "I'll miss you Kathy", I say, putting my arms around her and held her tight. "But you deserve your freedom and so does my dad. I couldn't leave Taehyung if I wanted to....."

I swallowed and let her go. "Do me a favor will you? When you give a pearl to my dad, explain why I'm not leaving too. I couldn't bear to see him hurt. And tell him, he's the best dad in the world, and I love him so much." Kathleen nodded. "Hey, it's okay", I tell her. "We still have some time together until after the wedding. Then-"

"Then I have to go", Kathleen finishes for me. "Yeah", I say, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "We have to get you ready then", Kathleen says, tucking the pearls in her pocket. "The wedding is tonight....."

Later on.....

It was almost time. Time for me to get married. I was standing on a podium-like stool, while the servants were dressing me in my wedding dress. It was black and purple, with several ounces of soft fabric and frills. My hair was down and brushed, and a veil was placed over my head, with a large crown on top. My leg wouldn't stop bouncing while they were doing my makeup and accessorizing me. I was crazy nervous, and I was still having some nagging second thoughts. The vial of poison was still in my pocket. Once they were done, they let me look in the mirror. "You look beautiful, Your Majesty", the gushed. I stared at myself. I did look pretty I guess, but a little different.
