When I arrived at Michael's, he wasn't ready, and telling by the bed head Oliver had I could tell he was busy. Oliver's eyes were staring at me and I was feeling a little uncomfortable. "Why are you here?" He asks.
"For your Dad." Is that the best thing to say? To tell him I'm just here for his dad instead of saying I'm here to date you father. Well what is the best way to tell someone else's kid that you're here to be the new guy in their dad's life... Well that's not the best thing to say at all. I don't even think, it'll work, this thing between Michael and I.
"Hi, I'm Selena! You must be Mikey's date." This blonde says to me with her hand extended. I assume she's Oliver's mom.
"Okay, I'm good. So Selena I'll be back some time tonight, he has to be fed, bathed and in bed by eight. Be good for her, and listen to her Ollie." He hugged and kissed his cheek.
"Ready Red?" I asked. Michael looked up at me and nodded. It took a little time to actually get out the door, because Oliver clung to Michael's leg.
After some tears were shed and lots of 'I'm sorry' we finally got to leave. "This isn't off to such a good start." Michael says.
"Ah, the night is still young, Red." I replied walking out the door and holding it open for him, and taking him to my car.
"So what are we doing at the park?" He asks as I open the car door for him.
"A little picnic and some duck watching. It sounds boring but by the time we get there the stars will be out." I said once I was in the drivers seat and putting my seat belt on. He did the same. The time change just happened so it gets dark around five.
As we drove it was quiet, a little awkward but not a lot. With my hand on the gearshift, he shifted uncomfortably. "Is Selena his mom?" I asked looking at him then back at the road. He laughed then answered.
"No, Selena is my sister. His mom, Phoebe, died when he was two." He said looking down at his hands.
"Oh, how? If you don't mind me asking." He looked up at the road then at me.
"I kinda do." He spoke. "I'm sorry, its just everyone assumes the worst in her. She just made some choices that weren't all that great."
"No need to apologize. You don't have to tell me." We continued the drive in silence. When we got to the park I got out and went around the car to get Michael's door but he was already out.
"I'm a big boy can get my own door and everything." He laughed and I laughed with. I grabbed his hand and pulled him over to the picnic blanket I had set up by the duck pond. We sat down on the blanket and watched as the sun went down and the ducks swam around.
"Why did you pick here? I come here all the time with Ollie. Its not that special." Michael says.
"Well, its Harry's favorite place to go. When I have him with me he always want to come here. Normally, I sit here while he runs around." I answered looking at him. He smiled but then frowned.
"Who's Harry?" He asked. I smile at him and answer that he's my brother.
From there we sat in comfortable silence. When the sun went down I grabbed the picnic basket from my car. We sat facing each other and once we had our food an ate. There was little conversations in between, to just figure out what we like, what we do for fun, just normal stuff that would happen on a date.
When we were done eating, I cleaned up and put it away in my car. I lied down on the blanket and Michael did the same looking at the stars as I rolled on my side to look at him. He was telling me the constellations, and pointing them out. When he was done he looked at me then back up. It was quiet and the only thing that interrupted the silence was his phone ringing. His ring tone sounds like Oliver saying 'I love you Daddy' and I will admit that is so adorable. He fished his phone out of his pocket and answered it.
He held up a finger for me to give him a minute. "Hello? Selena what's wrong?" He asks sitting up, his brow was furrowed in concern as the mumbles ceased on the other side. "Selena stop rambling and tell me what the hell is going on!?" The mumbles started again and his face turned to worry. "What happened to Oliver!?" He yelled, Selena must be rambling.
"Why would you let him do that by himself? He's four!... I don't care if he wanted to help, you tell him no and put him in the living room... I know he'll throw a fit but you let him... So? Selena just take him to the hospital and I'll meet you there." He hung up and turned to me. He put his phone in his pocket as he sighed. "She let him help take a pan out of the goddamn oven, by himself! He burned his arm. Would you let a four year old do that? By himself?" I shook my head and told him no. "Anyway, I have to meet my sister at the hospital with my injured kid."
I stood up as he did and grabbed the blanket. He kept apologizing and I assured him it was okay. The night was going well, and I knew something would mess it up, because its me and I normally cause bad things to happen.
When we got in my car I put the blanket in the back seat and started my car as he put his seat belt on. I drove to the hospital. "I'm sorry, we had to leave early. I really am, but Selena can be so clueless sometimes it's unbelievable." He apologized.
"Red, its okay. You don't need to apologize." I said turning the radio on a little and 'Thinking Out Loud' Ed Sheeran started to play. I sung along to the familiar song as I took the route to the hospital.

As I pulled in the parking lot to the hospital, Michael didn't even wait for me to stop before he opened the door and was walking to the entrance. "I'll just park, since you are in a rush." I said to myself, finding a spot close to the door. I parked and got out, walking up to the door. Michael was at the front desk explaining what happened to the nurse behind the desk and Selena held Oliver, I slowly walked up and stood next to my date. Oliver had tears running down his cheeks. Michael sighed as they finally took them back, I followed because I wanted to see what happened and also I wanted to stay with Michael.
"Hey, Red?" I said and he turned around with and expression I couldn't describe.
"Yeah?"
"Its okay that I come with right? I want to know if he's okay.." He looked shocked but nodded nonetheless. I continued to follow him and came upon a room. The nurse told us to wait in there, until a doctor came into check Oliver's arm.
Oliver sat on the bed with his feet swinging since they don't touch the floor, Michael was sitting behind him and Selena was in the corner crying silently. I walked over and sat in the chair. Oliver turned around and looked at his dad, minding his right arm, he crawled up to him and said "Snuggle." Michael didn't miss a beat he moved his arm and Oliver settled between his side and arm.
It was quiet and calm, with only my humming. I had 'Over the Rainbow' stuck in my head, I watched The Wizard of Oz last night and I sung along to the song. "Somewhere over the rainbow way up high, there's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby.." I sung softly with my legs pulled up and my phone in hand.
"Why'd you stop?" Oliver asked. His head popped up from its resting place in Michael's chest.
I looked up from my phone to his chubby little face. "What little one?" I questioned to make sure I heard him right.
"Keep singing, Daddy sing with him. Daddy can sing, I like when he sings." Oliver looked up at his father with complete idolization. I smiled at him then looked at Michael. He looked like he was going to protest but the doctor came in to check on Oliver.
