As the two of them were talking about Ella, she was walking in the corridor with her head down as if thinking deeply about something. She raised the knife in her hand and saw the blood dripping down to the ground with an unidentifiable gaze in her eyes.

Her thoughts went back to an operation theatre in her mementoes. Her mother was putting on gloves, on the stretcher, a dead body of a man was being pushed up, ready for dissection.

"Mom...I feel like I'm on the border of good and evil, humanity and insanity..." she sat on a chair beside the table, observing the group of people tearing the body apart with their scalpels and taking out the organs. She was there to learn.

Her mother was wearing a surgical mask and looked at her, straight in the eye.

"Just stay there."

Ella didn't know what exactly she meant by that. Whether she was warning her about not crossing the last line...or telling her that the border is where she should be.

"Am I doing the right thing?" She thought. The image of a cheerful and carefree girl was floating in her mind, fading inch by inch. Reality and past seemed like two different worlds to her. It felt like if she tries to touch it, she couldn't seem to reach her past self trapped within, which seemed very close but far at the same time.

Her eyes went towards the telephone attached to the wall. She walked up to it and picked up the receiver. "I should call the police."

Her hand that was on the receiver stopped and she slowly retrieved it back. Her thoughts were conflicted. She didn't want to call the police or else the whole situation would blow up, which was the last thing she wanted. Moreover, they hadn't exactly made the thieves very presentable to be given to the police without them being a little suspicious of the conflicted injuries. It would look way beyond self defence.

Ella shook her head and finally dialled the police number. She will figure out a way later. The phone line was silent. The call wasn't going out at all. She tried again but it was the same outcome. She glanced out of the window, at the heavy rain and thunder outside.

The phone lines must not be working properly in the rain so she wouldn't be able to contact the police

The phone lines must not be working properly in the rain so she wouldn't be able to contact the police. She slowly put down the receiver and slowly sighed.

"Ella..." a soft childish voice spoke up from nearby. Ella turned and saw May standing in the corridor as she dragged the torn bear behind her in one hand and held the bloody scissors in the other. She looked at Ella with tearful eyes.

She walked up to May and bent down in front of her. She wiped the tears off her face.

"What's wrong?" She asked softly. May's tears continued to fall down her face. "I'm scared."

Ella continued to wipe her tears. "You don't need to worry. I'm here, no one will be able to hurt you."

She looked at the bloody scissors and gently took it from her hand, she wiped them clean and gave them back to her.

"Stay close."May nodded and grabbed onto Ella's trouser ends.
