Germany and Fast Food?

When you are German and you think about Fast Food you do usually think about the American classics, Hamburger, fries ect. For me Fast Food was always typical American - and I mean it really is, you will nowhere in Germany, or Europe, find as many Fast Food chains as in the US. Okay we have McDonalds, Burgerking and Kentucky Fried Chicken, but that's basically it.
But here I finally noticed, what kind of great Fast Food we do have in Germany. And I am not talking about a restaurant chain, as I said when it's about that the Americans win. No I am talking about Currywurst and Döner.

These are just two additions to the basic Fast Food range, but they come from Germany and do basically only exist there (correct me if I am wrong).

Lets start with the Currywurst (translated "curry sausage"). In Germany we have more than 300 different types of sausage and together with the stereotypical Weißwurst the Bratwurst is probably the most famous one. A Bratwurst is nothing but a usually skinny type of sausage that you fry. It's easy to make and when you grill with your friends always something that everyone, except of vegetarians and vegans - but there is also vegetarian/vegan Bratwurst -, likes. Well, but a Bratwurst may sometimes seem a little boring so some genius person cut the Bratwurst in little pieces, added a hot type of curry-tasted ketchup (I have no clue if you have curry-tasted ketchup in the US, but please let me know if you do), scattered curry powder over it and sold it. Whoever this genius person was brought us the brilliant Currywurst which you can get in mild and spicy (and yes, there are really spicy versions, even if they are hard to find) versions. I may not have to say that, but I love Currywurst! I know almost every Currywurst-shop (?) in Cologne and would totally recomment my favorite next to Kaufhof on the Schildergasse (Sry, I had to make a little advertisement for this awesome, but unknown little shop (?) - if you are American or just from another city, just overread this or remember it for the case that you will ever visit Cologne)... Yes I am obsessed with Currywurst... AND I MISS IT!!!!!!

Okay a little crying about not finding a good Bratwurst to make my own Currywurst here in the US and then I go ahead.... :'(

Well, the other German Fast Food creation is the Döner. Some may comment now that Döner is not German, but Turk or Greek or.... I heard to many theories... and yes it was invented by immigrants, but it is much more popular in Germany than in any other country. I may have to say that I am a very picky eater and not a huge fan of Döner, but most of my friends are and I guess I cannot write about German food without mentioning that. A Döner is basically slized meat (pork or beaf), salad onions and other stuff in a bread... great description I know...Well I didn't eat it for many years, when I come back I may try one again and describe it a little better for you...

Last, but not least we have the classical Frensh Fries... and no, I do not want to tell you that they are actually German, because they are not! But the Germans had the awesome idea not only to eat them with Ketchup, but with Ketchup and Mayonaise. I do not like Mayonnaise (yes, you are allowed to kill me), but I grew up having to say that I don't like Mayonaise before we ordered fries. For me it's totally unusual that Americans eat their Sandwiches, but not their fries with Mayonnaise (by the way, Americans eat still much more Mayonnaise than Germans...)
And if you want to order fries with Mayonaise and Ketchup like a real German say: "Pommes Rot Weiß" (fries red white)

You are welcome ;-)

PS: I will definitely make a chapter about Schnitzel later on, I just wasn't sure if you would call that Fast Food and excluded it from that chapter...
