"It's the last day of August now." I kick a rock on the road. "We should've been getting ready to get back to school right now."

Violet sighed and picked up a pebble only to throw it. "Yeah. But none of that matters now, does it?"

I pouted and crouch down to look at the dead tulips on the flowerbed. All around us was useless plants, dead and unusable.

"Come on, guys, we should move on to the next section!" Gillian shouted from across the field.

Sonya, Gillian, and I quickly made our way over to her and Paula. Now that we knew that there wasn't anything here we had to move on.

"Okay, were going to go over there now and split up more efficiently." Said Sonya. "I'm going to go alone over to the far end of the field, Paula and Gillian you are going to search closest to where are now, lastly Violet and Emma are going over near the forest. We're all good on what to do?"

We quickly shot glances between each other and nodded. Just like that we moved along to our designated areas to look for an vegetation.

"How much you wanna bet that we won't find anything over here?" Violet sighed. "What makes Sonya think that there's anything over here? There's nothing anywhere. This is starting to feel like a waste of time."

My shoulders stiffened and I huffed. "We have to hope that every new field might have something we can eat." I smiled and crouched down, rolling up my sleeves. "Let's get started so we can go home to the rest soon."

"Oh my god there's truly nothing here, is there?" Violet gasped, drenched in sweat. "Guess this field is exactly like all the others."

I frowned. "Way to be negative, Violet. You remind me of Ray in that way." I pulled out a root, dead. "And I was glad to get away from that, you know."

Violet wasn't the happiest with my comment. "Sorry I can't find anything in a hopeless situation. Well, at least it's almost over." She huffed in smirk. "Guess we're going back home empty handed."

I stopped for a moment, starting to feel bad. We're really about to come home with nothing, even though we left at dawn? This wasn't fair.

Frustrated and quickly pulled out root, by root, by root, not giving it much thought. Dead, dead, dead, and...

"... a carrot?" I asked myself.

Violet was quick to scurry over my shoulder to look at my pathetic little carrot.

"Holy shit, you actually found something." She exclaimed. "We gotta keep looking near here. Quick, put it in the basket."

I quickly placed the bag between us both and joined Violet in pulling out the fields pathetic carrots. I may call them pathetic, but these are going to feed us. Quickly we started making up a pile of crappy carrots.

"Man, am I glad you're here. I would've given up if you hadn't pulled that out."

I smile and yanked out a carrot. "And I'm glad you're here to help me pull these out." I grab the bag and hand it over the Violet. "Take these down to the rest, they gotta know we found a lot. Give me your bag and I'll keep going."

Violet nodded and removed her bag from her back. "I'll be quick."

I waved her off and continued on my way with tearing out vegetables.

"Ooh, a potato." I held out. "Finally things are turning out well."

This was said too soon.
