Amongst ten rogue wolves, we ran side by side, away from a life we'd been stuck in for so long. We were running away from our home, our families. And we didn't have the faintest idea what we were running towards.

The forest of Everett Valley stretched on like the endless sky above it. The sun was barely up, only a few rays breaking through and shining onto the foliage.

I grew up in a secluded community. Everett Valley was a small town that ruled over three races naturally programmed to hunt each other. But there had been no blood shed in hundreds of years.

Until there was.

As the council was secretive and strict, not everyone's heart was filled with trust. Especially not my brother, Reece's. And since our hearts were fuelled by the same blood, we decided to go searching for a new life. A life without doubt. A life with meaning.

I continued to contemplate whether or not that was what we would find.

We were currently still running and my paws started to burn. Though I'd ran for hours before, being on them for days was becoming strenuous and painful. When I asked for a brief break, I was relieved when Reece allowed it.

Changing into my human skin so I could search through my Shrinking Bag for some ointments, my thoughts went back to the events that had called on our departure in such a haste.

There hadn't been enough time to question Dante, Kendra's promised, about the mystery of his blood. Its unnatural color had left me and my best friend both shocked and worried. We left the forest in a rush, adamant on not getting caught by any of the council's enforcers called Protectors.

We'd been in the south, a place strictly forbidden to ever step foot upon. But we'd learned a great deal about how Espheros truly worked, down where the houses were of atypical size for any of the three races residing in our home town.

The south, where the ocean's waves kissed the sandy shores, was riddled in questions that few truly tried to answer. Those that had, ended up being taken by the council. Kendra and I were nearly taken, too.

Our abrupt departure from the Thrakos mansion didn't leave much time to dwell on anything they said, really, for now it seemed a very real matter of both life and death. On our way back into familiar territory, we were spotted by Protector Thorn. He was one of the councils enforcers, patrolling the borders.

Getting out of Everett Valley became even more urgent than before. Everything that could go wrong, was already going wrong.

Kendra and I parted once we were back on our lands and I was greeted by Reece, who'd been filling his Shrinking Bag with some of his belongings.

Ointments, too, which had given me the idea to pack my own.

That recollection made me wonder if my decision to withhold what had happened with Protector Torn was wise.
