The summer I was eleven, my cousins came to visit for the week at our little cottage home. It was a yearly ritual for my family – with the beach right at our fingertips and an endless amount of space to run, it was the perfect place to dump you kids for a week while you finally get a well-earned break.
After a long day of swimming, pruning and tanning underneath the warm sun, we decided it was time to take a trip to the local library.
While browsing through the limited section of teen reads, I couldn’t help but notice my youngest cousin. She would pick up a book, flip to the last page, than determine if it went back on the shelf or in our pile. I couldn’t help but ask, “Bridget? Why are you doing that?”
Glancing up from the small paperback, colourfully decorated with fairies, that she was currently critiquing, she gave me a look that clearly meant I should know the answer. “To find out if the ending is good or not.”
“But why ruin it?” my voice that of a confused child, “why spend all that time reading the book if you already know how it ends?”
“Because Alex,” she sighed, “the ending is the best part.”
