PROLOGUE

The heat of the flames was suffocating as Sylvia watched the spindly trees burn; it stifled her breath and spread through her lungs. She felt it crawl into her chest. She almost didn't hear her name being called over the crackle of the fire.

"Melnik. Melnik! Sylvia!"

She glanced over her shoulder, hearing for the first time the wail of the police sirens as they came down the highway.

"Let's go. Now."
