He met her six years ago. In New York. They both knew it was just a fling, nothing serious, until it was. Until she knocked on his door and told him their worlds were about to change. She was 19, Derek was 20.
He tried not to get into detail with the pack when he left every month. Why he was gone for long periods at a time. He told them that he just needed space but they all knew deep down he wasn't telling the full truth.
Two years after the birth of his daughter she called. She had been diagnosed with lung cancer. She knew she wouldn't make it. She'd stay as long as she could but after awhile she knew Derek had to take Ellie, for good.
She managed to make it another two years. Derek woke Stiles up, covering his mouth so he wouldn't scream and wake the Sheriff.
"What the hell you dick!" Stiles slapped him.
"I have a daughter and her mother is on her death bed and I need help."
So Stiles helped. He talked to his dad and left to New York with Derek. Stiles told the pack not to ask questions and that everything was okay. They'd explain when they got home.
They stayed with them until her last day. Derek helped plan the funeral. They weren't together but they were friends. They were close. Derek was broken seeing his daughter go through this.
Stiles watched as Derek changed his entire life around in Beacon Hills. He got the perfect apartment to fit the two of them but also the whole pack. He moved into a nice neighborhood. Swapped the Camaro out for an SUV. And Stiles found himself falling in love more and more as he stood by him throughout all of it.
He was picking up the snack that Ellie had just eaten, the 3 year old leaving cookie crumbs and drops of milk behind. Derek was giving her a bath and tucking her in. When Stiles had finally peeked in, trying to sneak a listen in on story time he heard Derek whispering softly, playing with the hair on Ellie's head as she slept.
"The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other and that's all we have, I'll be your father and I'll hold your hand. You should know I'll be there for you when the world's not perfect, when the world's not kind, if we have each other then we'll both be fine."
It hadn't taken long for the two men to fall into quite a domestic routine. Stiles always came home after school and made dinner for the other two. He played with Ellie for a few hours after, watched a movie, and gave her a snack while Derek worked in his office. Derek Gabe her a bath and put her to bed. Then the two males would end up curled together on the couch kissing lazily with the TV quiet in the background.
Derek asked him out. Stiles showed up seeing Derek with makeup on his face and Ellie I'm a princess dress.
"Having a year party without me?" Stiles smirked.
Derek glared at him, "you're not welcome here."
Ellie giggles and ran over to Stiles, "I miss you Stiwes!"
"I missed you too, pumpkin."
She squirmed out of his hug and ran off, Derek coming over to greet him. "Hi." He smiled.
"Hi princess." Stiles laughed, letting Derek smudge lipstick across his cheek.
"How was school?" He asked, letting the younger help him clean his face.
"School was school."
"You busy tomorrow?" He asked, Stiles shook his head. "I'm taking you to dinner."
"Ooo! Let's go to rainforest cafe! Ellie will love it!"
Derek chuckled, "as much as I love that, I meant just us."
"Oh. Oh!"
"Yeah, oh." Derek smiles, "is that okay?"
Stiles nodded, "definitely."
Six months passed when Derek finally told Stiles he was his mate. Stiles only response was "I know." And a kiss to his cheek.
The sat on the porch, watching Ellie playing in the yard.
"The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have, I will be your lover, and I'll hold your hand. You should know I'll be there for you, when the world's not perfect, when the world's not kind, if we have each other then we'll both be fine." He whispered, leaning into the younger.
"We'll both be fine." Stiles whispered back.
After another year and a half passed, Cora moved in. Her and her boyfriend had broken up and it was pretty nasty causing her to move home completely heartbroken. Stiles did what he could to help her, give her some distraction. He made all her favorites.
Ellie always seemed to know when Cora was feeling her worst because she'd run over and tell her "I love you so much Aunty Cora" and squeeze her aunt as tight as her little body could.
It wasn't enough to mend her heart though. All she wanted was the pain to stop. She knew it would. But it felt like it'd never end. Derek was there whenever she needed him. Stiles would jump up to take care of Ellie the second he heard her mumble, "Derek, it hurts." Voice breaking.
They'd go for runs normally. Both of them in wolf form, sitting in the preserve where their family used to spend time, close to their old home. Derek never did get it fixed. Peter had wanted too, almost did. The three of them broke down together and the plans got halted.
Cora laid her head in his lap, the sun setting in the distance. They'd left clothes, blankets, and snacks out their knowing they'd be back sooner rather than later. She cried softly as Derek rubbed her back.
"You know I'm thankful for you even though we fight." He said softly, "you made high school hell for me." She laughed at him, "you're the reason I survived though."
"I hate seeing you cry." He continued, "The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have I will be your brother, and I'll hold your hand. You should know I'll be there for you when the world's not perfect, when the world's not kind, if we have each other then we'll both be fine."
