A month or two had passed since I first showed signs of Hanahaki. It had been steadily getting worse, singular petals turning into full-grown flowers. My throat felt like it was bleeding constantly because of the thorns.

"Please Sero," Mina begged. "You're getting worse. You need to get the surgery!"

"For the thousandth time, I told you getting the surgery is not the right thing to do," I said, not in the mood for arguing. Each breath I took was labored. Talking only made it worse.

Today, we were doing team battles in class. I groaned when Mr. Aizawa made the announcement to the class. Normally, I enjoyed team battles but I felt too weak to be doing any fighting. Each group was picked randomly. Mine consisted of Shoji, Jirou, and Tokoyami.

Mr. Aizawa announced that we would be wearing our gym clothes to the battle, much to everyone's disappointment.

Picking teams to face each other at random, I was unlucky enough to be put against Kaminari's team. His team consisted of Momo, Uraraka, and Ojiro.

Our teams were going first. We stood across from each other stretching as we prepared to fight. But before the whistle was blown for us to begin, a coughing fit brought me to my knees.

Thorns scratched my throat as I coughed up full roses into my hands. Blood dripped off the petals into my palms. Tears streamed down my face as I fought to breathe in between coughs which proved almost impossible.

Acting on instinct, Shoji scooped me up in his arms, telling Mr. Aizawa I needed help immediately before rushing me to the Recovery Girl.

On the way, black dots began swimming in front of my eyes. In between coughs, I was able to take one or two ragged breaths before the roses prevented me from breathing.

"I can't breathe-" I choked, my face wet with tears.

Shoji comforted me as more coughs racked my body. At that moment, I thought I was going to die.
